Will this just pop up or will we need to take our cars in for some sort of update? I use waze everyday to get to work and avoid traffic.

It is quite surprising to see Android Auto getting released but without one core application on-board. As how it was spoiled in the title above, the app is none other than Waze.

Well, the good news today is that Waze will soon get integrated on the phone-pairing system that is made for Android-powered phones and cars. The developers shared a Tweet today that Waze will finally be able to run on Android Auto before the end of this month.

The developers provided no explanation to why there is a delay to Waze but it won’t matter anyway as the users will finally get to use the application on Android Auto.


So it is late again, but this is the most recent...and the end of the month is only days away..

Cool deal...so curious to how it will run with AA. If you select the Map option, will it automatically run if the app is installed and ready to go on the phone? Interesting though...

It will likely work like the music apps do when you have more than one compatible. The little arrow by the icon in the bottom will allow you to select which one you are wanting to use. Then that one becomes the default for the icon for that AA session.

This has nothing to do with GM. The car will display what the Android Auto app tells it to display. Just like when a new app is added. It just shows up. Now if it is like apple the updates came with iOS 10. Most features and new stuff was backward compatible but not all. So there may be a portion the next cars will do that we can't currently. Just an odd example would be using the arrows on the 5 ways switch to thumbs up/down a accident location.... if something like that did come out we would not just get an update. It would be included in the new io7 GM system and we would just go without.

The Waze app is not built-in to Android. It's a separate app you have to install and then update (or set to auto update). Once they release the version with AA compatibility, you just update it as you would any app on your phone. Even the Maps app on Android gets updates the same way. It does not depend on an OS update.

One of the major things about Android Auto and CarPlay is standardization of interfaces. Features per se will not require new hardware, it's all software on the phone doing the work. So myLink in our cars will stay useful much longer than other infotainment systems without AA/CarPlay. So if they did enable extra controls (like the direction pad on the wheel), it's software enabled..not a hardware change. GM just has to allow Google/Apple to write code to use it. A prime example is Apple advising CarPlay Maps will soon link with instrument panel displays. It's changes in hardware on the phone side you have to worry about.

Items like a change in physical connection (i.e. like Apple did with lightning, wireless Android Auto/CarPlay). Even the rumored wireless Android Auto is supposed to use the car's WiFi hotspot to enable backwards compatibility. There's been no word on how Apple will enable theirs, but they have a track record of changing hardware too.

I didn't say android auto is built in. I was talking about Apple at the time, and talking about GM's OS. I understand these features pretty well.

So to explain what I was saying as you didn't get it obviously. "Apple" ios10 and Apple CarPlay has support for drivers information center display built in. GM io6 interface in my 2016 SS does not have that support built in, therefore if you use apple carplay in GM you do not get this support currently. Obviously if I were an apple user I would have to go without that feature of carplay. If GM adds that ability into io7 interface than Apple CarPlay users with Apple ios 10 will have drivers information center support. These examples are not fictitious like my first example. This feature in Apple carplay today does in fact require a change on the part of GM to work.

EDIT: I apologize, I somehow missed the apple part of your post. I will bring this up and find out for sure. Interesting topic, I would still ASSUME GM would have to allow the display to project. The "projection" app would have to have programming built in GM's interface to have the ability to display.
Or will GM let them write code, or do a OTA update for them, or not spend the time on sold cars... I can at least ask any see if I get an answer.

The DIC and HUD in the 6th gen already allow some AA/CarPlay info to display, Audio. Playing any source of music will display artist/track info on both if you are in Audio displays. The key is Apple/Google have to code for every make supported to use these displays. Audio was pretty easy since there are already standards in use (iOS, BT, USB all can display metatag info). Maps is a bit more complicated, which is why we haven't seen it yet. Once the coding is done, it should function similar in that you switch displays in the DIC(or HUD) to navigation section for whatever info they can display.

Remember the HMI is what controls all the displays/controls in the car. The HMI is where AA/CarPlay connects to. At that point GM has already given both companies the information on how to make various display/controls work. I didn't even think of it last night but the directional pad on the wheel actually does control AA/CarPlay...if you have the Audio display open in the DIC. Hitting up or down will change the tracks, exactly like the Fav buttons do on the wheel.

Me too...should be great, I love using Google Maps via AA, should be even better with Waze.

When's this supposed to happen? Very excited to have access to Waze on AA.
