There's quite the disconnect here between autox guys and track guys as to what a good tire is. I really don't think you autox guys will like the goodyears.

That's an extremely fair assessment. The G2 at least is useless and honestly dangerous until lap 3. We will see if they fixed cold operation with the G3.

Motor Trends figure 8 time matched the M4 GTS and GT350R, and that is a pretty tight set up. So maybe the 3's get hot quicker and perform better when cooler than the 2's? Not to mention the 1.09g lateral grip was most likely measured on less than hot tires. |

Tire fights are awesome...
![]() IMHO, the real problem is there is no 'jack of all trades' tire for DD, AutoX and Track. They all need different things. I've run 5 different sets of tires on my old car. Goodyear F1's - 240TW (not the same as the G2/G3, obviously) Daily - great tire, good dry traction, excellent wet traction and quiet. AutoX - fair tire, they could handle multiple inputs pretty well, but I was usually 2 sec off the class leaders on RS-3 or Direzza's. However, on a wet course, I would be 5+ sec ahead. They were really amazing in the wet. I never ran these on track. Dunlop Direzza ZII SS - 200TW Daily - noisy. Dry grip was great, wet grip was fair. Noticeably less than GY. AutoX - fantastic. Put me in the running with the RS-3s. But you had to keep them cool. Hot = greasy. Track - great grip until they got hot. Then they were skates. And the best part, is they chunked like crazy. Bridgestone RE-71R - 200TW (yeah, right) Daily - they sound like you have a bad wheel bearing. Seriously, I DD'd these for about a week waiting on my MPSS to arrive and stopped the car twice to check the wheel. Using these for daily is a waste. AutoX - the best tire you can get (currently) that isn't a Hoosier. The grip is trans-formative. They don't like heat either. So in Florida in the summer months, you need to spray them to keep 'em sticky. They do grip until there is virtually no visible tread left with very little fall-off. Track - great for the 1st session. Then they get hot and are still good, but not as good as 'cold'. They wear incredibly fast on track. I went through two sets in 6 events. Pilot Super Sports - 300TW Daily - the best daily tire I have used. If these were/are available for the 1LE, I'll switch to them ASAP. Good dry traction, better wet traction, quiet and you can put a lot of spirited miles on them. AutoX - not great. They don't really care about temps, they just don't stick as well as <300TW tire. Track - these were my daily set, so I never ran them on track. Nitto NT01 - 100TW Daily - kidding, right? ![]() AutoX - Nope. Need heat. Like the R6/7 Hoosier Track - great tire and half the cost of a R7. What I ended up with was three sets of wheels and tires that got swapped for events. MPSS for daily, RE-71R for AutoX and NT01 for Track. With the 1LE, so far, our tire options are severely limited. With the Goodyear G3's being such a great price point, I may get two sets of those. Does anyone know if a 19" wheel will clear the front brakes? That would be a good choice for AutoX and open up some options. It's going to be a lot of fun watching everyone figure out what works out there. Now, I just need my car!

That's why they'd be fine until getting a better setup. No use in spending the premium on 20" tires when you'll go 19's.

My plan is to switch to Michelin Pilot Super Sports (or the new replacement for the PSS, the Pilot Sport 4 S) as soon as the Goodyears are worn. I've had PSS on my BRZ and my BMW 328i and they are astounding... multiple track days and over 20k road miles on a single set. Not quite expecting the same longevity on a 455hp muscle/track car but I'm sure it will still be decent.

I absolutely love my G:2s...had the opportunity to switch to something else multiple times...but these things just LOVE getting hot. They wear "ok" for their price range/performance level...but when cold - you've got to drive like their cold. AutoX might be better on something else. Road course? Ohhhh joy, after the second lap of the day... The G:3 tire looks like a substantial upgrade. Remember - the G:2 was a leap ahead of the original G:1 tire. Looks like they finally attempted to deal with water issues with the revised mid-inner tread design...but they kept the shoulder design. Supposedly GM worked very closely with Goodyear to develop these for the ZL1, and consequently the 1LE. |

I wonder how they hold up at the track. I've used NT01, PSS and RE71R for track days. PSS is not a track tire for sure and RE71Rs heat cycle out very quickly and also overheat after 4-5 hot laps (Still better than PSS of course) .
NT01s are great compromise when it comes to longevity (they simply don't heat cycle out and can be used till the cords) , price and performance wise. If the new Gen 3 tires fall somewhere between NT01 and RE71Rs, in terms of consistency and longevity it might be a great option for the money

I have to say though, my experience with the RE71Rs is limited to S2000, it may not last as much on a heavier car like a Camaro . I'd say they're good for 4-5 track days and you definitely feel they fall of after the 4th event

Hard to beat GY's when they are warm...in fact I did not find a tire that was better and I searched. The MPSS are great on the street and lasted 1 lap at the track, before I took that crap off my car. I would rather run duct tape, rubber bands and a ball of string at the track than MPSS
![]() I am now on 19's with the Spyder and have much better choices for much less $$$. I just picked up a set of new trofeo take offs for less than $900. hopefully the G3's are a great combo tire (AX, Track), that would be a 1st!! |
