Snap Crackle Pop
Let me start by saying I have the NPP exhaust and love it. I love the option to quiet it down. I love the low RPM lack of drone. The only thing I'm not as fond of is the "new" muscle car crackle. It's like they tried to copy the old HEMI exhaust note from the 60's. I much preferred the deep rumble of the Gen5 NPP at WOT. I love the roar that I hear inside my car at 3/4 throttle with the windows up when I hold a gear and get it up into the higher rpms. Windows down and full throttle next to a wall or in a tunnel, it's just a bit too "brash". Maybe just a little too close to what a kid in a civic with a fart can muffler is going for.
Does anyone else feel that way? And of so, are there any aftermarket companies who are looking to remove some of the crackle and replace it with good old fashioned rumble? The only aftermarket exhausts I've listened to seem to add more crackle, not less. Any chance the crackle is a side effect of the factory tune or factory intake? ![]() I like the NPP stealth mode, and lack of drone...but that's it. I cannot stand the WOT and cruising sound when open....I call it a cross between a Raspy Exotic and a high horse no torque Ricer.....I want Muscle, Bass, Deep growl. I found that combo on my 5th with a borla X-pipe, Outlaw Cat-back, and one of Ted's tunes. Still trying to figure out what it's gonna take to duplicate it on the 6th DD SS and then the ZL1. |

I've always found that larger pipes and lower exhaust velocity = deepest tone. I agree about the snap, crackle, pop especially on startup when I almost cringe, but from a distance or blowing by it couldn't sound much better. I don't care enough to throw exhorbitantly-overpriced-bolt-on money at it.

I know some people like the traditional sound more, but I think it's great that our cars have a unique sound. Even with headers, you get to keep that snap, crackle and definitely the pop but it's a little deeper and louder. Cruising in 3rd you get a nice rumble blended in there. Right now it's unique until every manufacturer starts throwing it on their cars. I love the gen5 sound too though, a lot actually. Hell, there aren't many unique performance exhaust that I don't like except something completely fake or a 4 cylinder trying to sound like a muscle car (CLA45 AMG comes to mind).

H-pipe. Cheap and effective to deepen the note. I don't think there is anything wrong with the NPP muffler and the size/flow of the factory exhaust is not as terrible as in the past.

I agree 100% OP. Wide open the NPP LT1 sounds awful unlike the 5th gen NPP. As a guess I think it is caused by LT1 Camaro shorties. When I added LTs to my 5th gen 1LE it made the same sound but louder. I cured it with a Magnaflow Xpipe. But since it made the car too quiet I think I would like to try something different. I will start listening to other exhaust systems. The problem is all of the catback systems are WAY overpriced.
If anyone buys an aftermarket NPP compatible catback and wants to get something louder let me know. Hmmm Hpipe? ^

Funny thing is the original prototype SS's had an H pipe. Even the one shown at shows on that roll over rack to show the chassis had an H pipe. For whatever reason they changed to an X pipe for production.

I've had nothing but compliments on my NPP w/ secondary cat delete. Not a single person has not liked it.

Maybe this is my answer. This Hooker axleback has an xpipe muffler which is almost exaclty what the Magnaflow Xpipe is. It is only a little louder than stock. Hooker claims 15+ HP at the crank I assume. You also drop 8 pounds. It is still an expensive axleback but it supports NPP.
