I learned to drive a manual on a 1993 Mazda b2200 pickup..no power nothing except brakes (without a functioning ABS system) and 85 rip-roaring horses...

I can't imagine learning on a 455 HP Camaro SS! Lol

Youre not alone....When I bought my Civic SI years ago, I bought it on the spot with zero experience! I was stalling all over San Francisco when I was stationed there. After a few weeks youll get used to it.

Congrats on the car!

You'll be fine. It should be interesting to see how I do, I'm in a similar scenario: I've never driven a manual car. I've driven a manual 10 speed 18 wheeler for years with ease, but driving a manual with synchros is gonna be completely new to me. I gotta break the habit of double clutching and remember that I cant float gears in a car

But definitely be careful not to burn that clutch.

I have a question for those with an SS: how strong is the torque? can you just ease of the clutch and be given enough power to roll with ease, or do you have to step on the gas a bit while getting off the clutch pedal? I know that with a big rig's 1500+ feet/pounds of torque you can just let off the clutch pedal and have enough power to get you rolling fast enough without needing to feather the gas. I wonder how the 455 feet/pounds do to haul the car's weight in first gear.

I appreciate all the advice and support from eveyone I think I've watched every YouTube video on how to drive a manual but knowing what to do and actually doing it are two completely different things.

On a good note after much practice yesterday, I went out on an actual road and didn't stall once at a red light. Not every take off was perfect but I think they were pretty decent. I did stall at a stop sign however bit it was because it was on a hill. All in all I think I made great progress after a few hours. So now I have to keep practicing till I can get the sweet spot on the clutch with out thinking too much. I'll keep you guys updated on my progress.

That's how you burn up your clutch and shorten its life
I was told that 1200 was a good spot to start but was able to take off with the rpms under 1000 a couple times so I'll definitely try to do that from now on

I'll be right there with ya when I get mine. It will be my first manual car. I've driven one before (for about 5 minutes) and motorcycles but that's about it.

As Click and Clack from Car Talk have said on many occasions, "If you don't stall a manual transmission every once in a while, you're not driving it right".

I did this EXACT same thing a few years back when i got my 2010 SS. The drive home was interesting to say the least. Stalled out on almost even stop haha. Everyone is right the more you get nervous or embarrassed and try to rush when you've stalled out the more you keep messing up. Just take your time.

My dad taught me an invaluable thing about newer manual cars and i believe it's been mentioned already. Most of these cars have that "sweet" spot where the car will automatically start inching forward when you slowly release the clutch. You don't even need gas to get it to start going a little. Once you find that spot you can easily give it the gas needed to get going. Worked for me.

my first car had 4-on-the-floor, 64hp and no tachometer.

The trick to teaching your left foot how to modulate the clutch smoothly can be done in an afternoon.

Find a large parking lot or low-traffic neighborhood with wide streets.

on a fairly flat street, use 1st gear and only your clutch foot to get the car rolling. no throttle.

repeat until it is easy.

Now use 2nd gear and only your clutch foot to get the car rolling. no throttle.

repeat until it is easy.

Now use 3rd gear. no throttle.

repeat until it is easy.

Your clutch foot is now trained. no tach required. starting off in 1st with a small amount of throttle should be child's play.

I really want to see video.
Can you set up a dash cam for next few days?
It gets serious in here sometimes and we could use some entertainment.

I wish I had one especially on the drive home from the dealer. You would have seen me almost get in an altercation if it weren't for the cop I mentioned dudes got out of their car and everything
