Mobile 1 is my bet for the LT1 factory fill and I recently started using the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Plus 5w-30 also and took it in and had the dealer use my oil on my last service before Camaro Fest. Dexos certified full synthetic oil 5 quart jug for $27 at walley world.

Yeah wal mart is definitely the best place and cheapest to get Mobil 1.

You know, I used to really care a lot about what oil went in my car, but nowadays they are all so good it doesn't really matter. I bought my Gen 5 certified with 5,000 miles on the OD, so I've yet to pay for a single oil change. I think I have one remaining. The car's just dandy on the GM stuff. When I have to start doing my own, it is going to be pretty rough because the LS3 takes 8 quarts. I used to be a die hard GC 0W-30 guy, and I still have some in stock, but when I start having to buy 8 quarts in a clip I'm going to buy 5 quart jugs of what's on sale.

How many quarts does the LT1 take? I miss my LS1 and its 5.5...

GM Will buy whatever oil they can get cheapest that meets there spec's. Mobil 1 undercut all the other manufactures in the late 90's to establish a name. and they sold it to GM a little cheaper for that little tag the corvettes had (only use Mobile 1). Its all a corporate game. New car dealers will buy the cheapest bulk oil they can that meets the GM spec.

Keep in mind, the Dexos spec is a very high bar. When the spec launched not all Mobil 1 weights met the standard.

So even the cheapest oil that meets the spec is still very good stuff.

I think the Dexos play was a powertrain warranty protection effort. GM at the time had the 5 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and one way to ensure better durability for the engine was not allowing crappy oil.

I've reviewed the specs and GM is simply mandating better oil. Yes it was done to protect GM from additional warranty expense, but we should look at the benefit to the customer (us) as well. I don't want my engine to fail any more than GM does and now after 60,000 miles that's out MY pocket not GM's. So a better oil helps me too. Problem is people aren't looking at this way. They'll pay for Mobil 1 but rip on Dexos. As I said, in the beginning, all Mobil 1 products didn't meet the Dexos standard. IT WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH. I believe they all do now. So buying Dexos is simply paying more for better oil. Yes it should cost more as I believe to meet the standard qualifies as a semi-synthetic.

That is funny. A full synthetic losing to a synthetic blend. Just because something is a well-known brand doesn't mean it is good. Mobil 1 has been known for ages to be on the thin side and be more prone to burning. When you run Mobil 1, you need to check your oil levels more often. It always performed on the lower end on BITOG if memory serves.

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for companies to void your warranty or deny coverage under the warranty simply because you used an aftermarket or recycled part.... The manufacturer or dealer must show that the aftermarket or recycled part caused the need for repairs before denying warranty coverage. (http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/
edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt192.shtm)

That act is not that simple. There have been several court interpretations of the meaning of that act., Its up to interpretation of aftermarket part. If you are replacing a stock part with an aftermarket part that is designed to replace that part within the engineering standards, that act applies. Example, if you do not like delco oil filters and you want fram filters. That cannot void the warranty.
If you are putting on parts from an aftermarket manufacturer that are designed to operate outside the engineered standards and change the parameters of what the engine or vehicle was designed to do. Chevy can void your warranty. Example You do not like the supercharger the car was designed for. and you put a bigger one on. VOID. This was discussed in the Auto Mag's at length years ago.
