It's not heat soak. It has only happened on cold starts after the car has been sitting for several days.

You are obviosuly having an issue since you are throwing codes but watch this video to better understand why the long crank happens on cold starts. It is normal and has to do has to do with meeting emissions.

Thanks. That definitely explains why the engine has to crank over for a while before it fires. The problem is with my engine it either doesn't fire during the cranking process or it fires and then shuts off. It's clearly not getting enough fuel at start up when this happens. And it doesn't happen every time I start it when it is cold.

The high pressure fuel pump is in charge of maintaining rail pressure. There is a solenoid which controls the amount of fuel entering the pump. It gets a PWM control signal from the ECM. I think the solenoid may be sticking. Finicky behavior related to temperature can be a sticky solenoid.

Can't tell if you if there are any codes when it has happened, but my car has had some long-crank starts that resulted in not starting, starting fine, or starting with erratic idle and backfiring (shutting it down and starting again allows it run correctly). The longer the car sits without being started, the more likely this is to occur. I only had it occur once on me this year, though, and it was the first start of the season after sitting for 4.5 months and experiencing a dead battery while it was sitting.

I'm going to take it back to the dealer this week and let them check the code again and suggest that they check the solenoid that controls the amount of fuel going into the fuel pump to see if it might be sticking.
