Better to try to isolate the problem before you go breaking into your own vehicle only to find out the battery was fine and it was just a defective FOB.
You are way over thinking the key hole cover, that cover is designed to be removed, it isn't some difficult procedure, GM designed it to be done with the "hidden" key... It isn't "breaking into your own car", it was made to be done that way, by design...

You're right, but I will say that it's pretty difficult to pop off that keyhole cover without scraping the clearcoat. Also, replacing it is very tricky, you have to position the cover at a particular angle, otherwise half the retention notches will engage and the others not, which then makes removing and re-seating it even more difficult without damage. So I prefer to avoid having to do this if at all possible.

Inside one of those magnetic keyholders, you mean?

Won't start

Fiddle farting around troubleshooting my 2023 LT1 Camaro suddenly not starting when the wife admitted having run BOTH key fobs through the washing machine, but did not run them through the dryer.

Been reading the procedure for reprogramming the key fobs which is similar to arming and launching a submarine launched intercontinental ballistic missile with multiple nuclear re-entry vehicles.

Really?

The “hidden key” is accessible on my FOB without having to open it up.
I use the key to lock my glovebox when I need to.

Yes it is a jump through hoops routine at this point! I suggest to anybody with two functioning fobs to program a couple more fobs the easy way and stash them somewhere safe

Couldn't I just stagger my battery changes, making sure to reprogram the one with the fresh replacement right away to avoid forgetting?

Sounds like the batteries die in about 4ish years, regardless of use

The batteries are about $2 each, here it the game plan, every 2 years change both of them and never have a problem, it comes out to about $2 a year for your $50k car...

My suggestion is more towards fobs, getting lost or damaged. The programming of a new fob is a lot easier with the two fobs method compared to only having one fob or no fobs that work.

So ideally to reprogram a fob you need two working ones. If one just had a battery replacement would that still work as two functioning ones, or would that one have "lost its programming" after battery removal?

To me it sounds strange to have to replace batteries in the key fobs after only four years.

I've got three older cars, a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 LTD, a 2002 Camaro SS, and a 2004 Ram SRT-10 and I've never replaced the batteries in those key fobs and they still work fine.

It's possible that they don't have as many features as the newer Camaro so they are used less, but they do have remote lock/unlock, arm alarm features. Also these cars have very low original miles, so I guess the fact that they aren't used constantly also contributes to the long battery life.

$3.00 gets you a strip of 5 "name brand" batteries on ebay.
Same money gets you 15 no-name batteries.

Changing batteries shouldn’t lose the program, I bought a few spare fobs and programmed them as fobs three and four as back ups, in case something ever happens to the originals. Page 14 in the owners manual explains how to do it.
