The original pump held solid then the new one failed. That sucks. Was it a OEM GM pump?

The new one was a GM. The crank also has a crack in it somewhere up front by the snout, when we pulled the balancer bolt out oil ran out the front of the crank. That's where the spun mains were also. I just know that the oil pressure dropped to 12 psi at idle. I can't find a hole where the chain or tensioner wore thru the pump.

I just looked at some early posts and I thinking my pump didn't fail and could have all been caused by the cracked crank. My pump looks like the one that new and not the one 2 breaks where the ring is broken.

Damn, Greg. I guess this makes you a true pioneer, but not in a good way! Yours is the first crank failure that I've heard of in a lt1/lt4

It surely is since oil should run out of the front of the crank. There is no indication of anything rubbing the pump. Maybe others have seen this but don't recall seeing any posts on it.

Looks like mine just went out on Sunday as well. Had the car is at the dealership today. Will keep everyone posted...mine happend right by my house and the car itself was fine then while sitting a a stop sign I got the low oil warning and it was at 20psi...I immediately blipped the throttle and it went back to 40 and continued the few blocks back home. The pressure stay at 40 but the guage was erratic and jumpe up to 80 for a flash then 40....I pulled into the garage let it idle and in the course of a few seconds it went back down to 20, light came on and I immediately turned it off and had it towed to Dealer.

Car was built in the range from 3/17 to 11/17 for what that's worth. mileage 10,800

Well, here we go again. A car within the same build dates as me. I predict there will be a continued string of these failures, as GM has not really responded to the issue. Who knows what replacement pumps are going to be installed, as most GM dealers don't even know themselves what's up with this problem.

If this will even be an option for our wet sump pumps, check out the cost:

I love my ZLE like no other car before it, and want to keep it as my final fun car, but I hate having to watch the oil pressure more than the tach or speedo. It seems like there should be a class action suit initiated against GM to cause this problem to be rectified. It's a shame to get to this point, but unless GM is FORCED to expose the actual numbers of oil pump failures that have happened, and what they/Melling have done to resolve it, there is no way to know if a replacement pump from GM is not the same piece of shit the engine builders put in to start with. I really don't want to have to trade this car in for something else, but even with an extended warranty I have, I am not planning on having my car pulled apart by dealer stooges that don't even know what kind of oil to use.

It looks like I may have to start considering a different 'final fun car'......

I feel the same way. Sadly I was just happy it happened right by my house after being out running errands.

Wish I would have noticed this thread prior to purchasing my 2018. I got it with 2000 miles on it and now has 5500 but this makes me nervous. I also did headers, intake and lower pulley. Not that those mods would cause an oil pump failure but they probably won’t warranty the pump.

I would sell it if it is bothering you this much. I actually had this failure and I'm not nearly as concerned as you are.

I may well do that. Every person has different levels of concern, for very different, personal or professional reasons. Mine are based on my lifestyle, needs, age and desires, l'm glad your situation didn't seem to have a bad impact on you. For me, it's a critical concern, as l don't want to take a long weekend drive through the mountains and have my oil pump die and strand me.

Above all that, there are enoigh of these events happening that Chevy should be forced to provide a pre-emptive repair if it's determined there is a defective design issue. Look what just hapened to Ford with their small car transmission problems.

I believe l'm going to seek some legal input to determine if a class action suit could apply. I would much rather have just an oil pump changed instead of a whole engine, oil cooler and cooler lines replaced if the motor grenades.

Very disappointed with GM over this situation.

Does anyone here have a failed oil pump that they would be willing to send us? We would love to dig into the root cause of these failures to try to develop a solution.

This! Someone please get their pump to Katech for an autopsy...! A proper wet sump pump from Katech would be a no brainer on an engine build.
