Amazing how many posts on this rather personal subject. I wonder how many posts are honest. How many actually make over 100k. There's no fact-check. If one has good/great credit buying a Camaro is pretty easy. I have a great pension and a rather large 401k balance with money market certificates. Been retired since 2008. Now, how much of what I said is true? All, part, or none? Maybe it's none of your business.

Couldn't afford not to buy one, the regret would have cost even more.

As for good credit, it can make buying a Camaro easy, but it can also make going in over your head easy too. On the other side of the coin, people get good credit by not having a propensity to go over their heads.

I've always wondered why people are afraid to talk about salaries. Maybe my curious nature, much like the OP, makes me gauge how I'm doing based on talking with others and learning what they make. I try to model some decisions based on other people that are successful. I think it's mainly a generational thing. It seems older people are much more uncomfortable revealing their big secret.
I'm 28, and work for the government. All Fed salaries are public and can be found by anyone online. Maybe thats why my coworkers are more open talking about it. My salary is right at 96k. Wife makes 35k as a retail manager. So for 131 combined, I was still nervous about the car... 46 out the door. I grew up poor so ever since getting out of college I've been a huge saver so the 96 isn't all spendable due to significant 401k and savings contributions. This has been our first big purchase. Previous vehicle was a 99 blazer that was falling apart. We still have it (210 on the clock) but wife uses it since her job is local, and to use it for our dog. We chose to drive the old POS and save so we could make this happen. That's it for my long winded answer.

One of the big reasons I haven't bought an SS is that here in San Diego where real estate is super expensive......I'd have to park the SS outdoors.....all the time.....in random parking spaces even though it is permit parking. We have a "2 car" garage at our townhouse but it's really not made for 2 cars. Maybe 2 Fiat 500s could squeeze in there....maybe. My girlfriend's charger fits in there but no way a Camaro would as well.
I could ask her to park her Charger outside......it's just an SE V6 for heaven's sake! That would not go well...at all :( I just don't see me parking an SS outside in random spaces. Even if it we do live in a great little neighborhood. |

Ex: You look at the rich dudes at Barrett Jackson buying cars for over 100k then you see their reaction after it's sold to them and it's like stone faced, no reaction at all. If it were me I'd be running up and down the aisles shouting!

I make $50k a year my fiancé makes about $25k a year, I paid 37k out the door,it was a splurge but idc we live comfortably but we don't have finer things,we live in a small apt,no satellite etc,we stay within our means, but I still consider the car a huge splurge, but I'm the type who lives like I might die Tomm,we enjoy our lives, not save our money for old age.

Credit worthy
I won't divulge my wife and my income. But both of our credit scores are awesome. I can't believe how high they are. But we work hard, spend wisely, and most important, we stay home. We are certain that the only way for us to be unable to easily afford our payments is for us both to lose our jobs during a major recession/depression. So we are fairly optimistic.

Why is discussing salary such a taboo subject for some people? You might learn some really valuable things in a discussion with others about salary across the industries we all work in. Yes the subject invokes a lot of dick swinging, but there is knowledge to be had from it.
I didn't consider the car splurging. I give myself a "toy allowance" of $1400 a month. I can buy/finance/sell/trade whatever I want (cars trucks motorcycles dirtbikes etc) so long as I don't go over $1400 in monthly payments. I work in IT (not management), and I'm somewhere around 140k on paper. So then you ask why do I only get $1400 a month for toys and then I'll tell you I have a wife that's a full time student and 5 kids from 5 baby mamas

Amongst internet acquaintances, i mean we are going to get true numbers...like yeah ok. Also, what one considers salary another may use total compensation etc. It's just...I really don't care to know I guess. It's another thing to know what your direct peers at your company make.
