The numbers indicate otherwise, sir....stock for stock the L99 SS loses to the LS3 SS assuming the manual driver doesn't screw up the launch and can shift reasonably well. Now if you only tune the L99...then yes, the advantage almost instantly flops the other way. |

The arguing over transmissions is super ridiculous. The car is about you and what you deem fun. Feeling connected to the car and the road is for me so I got an M6, because it feels more so that way than does and paddle in my experience. The debates about this are so played out. Jabs at people with autos "not driving" are ok in good fun but all this serious spewing back and forth is just a sad waste of time.

The A8 makes a lot of sense if you're going to drag race, but virtually none of these cars will see the strip more than once a year, if ever. These cars will live and breathe on the street, and that's where the M6 will always shine. These are driver's cars, and something is lost with an A8. On C5, I remember PSJ's build. His goal was specifically go get a bolt-on C5 into the 11's. And he did. He went big - every bolt-on, a big converter, tires...THAT is how an Automatic Camaro should be. But most of these A8's will never see the track or mods beyond a CIA and maybe some bolt-on mufflers, and those cars just don't fit with an A8. Let's face it - almost no one that stops with a cold air intake really wants an automatic transmission deep down. These threads turn into pissing matches because, I think, a lot of people get annoyed when people justify the purchase with words like "commute" and "traffic" and "track times" when the car never sees the track. I'd respect a poster much more if they just came out and said they have never driven stick and don't really have an interest in learning. I gotta tell you, I've been stuck in Philly traffic from Hell 1,000 times and these cars are so incredibly easy to drive with their electronic throttle bodies and hydraulic clutches - you just can't stall once you get the slightest bit of forward motion - they have never been remotely annoying to drive. You can just tell when someone is being dishonest.

Context is important. When you make a blanket statement - like you won't be disappointed with the A8 - you're gonna hear from the people that will be disappointed with the A8.

I think you're making more assumptions than the OP. I drove nothing but M6 cars for decades, the most notable being a 1999 Corvette Z51 hardtop and a 2005 Corvette not to mention many "lesser" vehicles like the new Beetle when it came out, Honda Accord, and other manuals. I drag raced the Vettes and was told by many that I was a master of the stick: able to shift fast enough that the front end didn't even drop between shifts. Qualifications aside (don't care if anyone believes those), I enjoyed those cars and certainly think I qualify as "knowing how to drive" a manual. Still, I do not want one! With the advancement in automatics in recent years, I don't feel I need one to justify the "fun" and "involvement" and the daily use of a manual just doesn't justify or override the benefits of the automatic. Now, that's me. Plenty of people would disagree. But I certainly don't fit in your blanket statements! Mike |

If you like manauls, and "muh connection to the car", why would you ever consider an auto in any form? Seems like it could shift down to .0001ms accuracy with no lag and I'm pretty sure those people still would not want the auto. |

I have to say, after watching the Z06 video and seeing the corvette fire off those WOT shifts I actually want to check out the A8. I guess based on my earlier question neither transmission is ruled out so it comes down to personal preference. What I'm also curious about is how the A8 transmission performs in regular day-to-day driving. For example, my Accord has a tendency to rubber band after shifting in stop and go traffic. Very annoying. For those that have put some miles on their automatics, how does it fair? Any annoying idiosyncrasies?
Also, on a completely unrelated note. M2 pricing was revealed and it's pretty much the cost of a loaded 2SS Camaro. Going to make this decision a bit more complicated.

I really want remote start by fob or cellphone. That's the main reason for wanting an auto. Also can you still bump start the manual? Or is that a thing of the past?

If the A8 in the 6th Gen Camaro is as good as the A8 in the Challenger, you auto folks are in for a real treat!
![]() Nice and smooth! Still trying to get used to being in 7th or 8th gear going 45-50 mph though. It just doesn't seem right. LOL Hope you new A8 Camaro owners are enjoying your A8 as much as I am! |
