I just found this. It looks like battery replace fears are unfounded.

There's a paragraph in that report that is probably more applicable to performance enthusiasts . . . the following charging "recommendations" could be unreasonably confining.

Quote:
“Found internal imbalance in HV battery due to consistent supercharging to 100% from a low state of charge (SOC) without any rest periods in between. HV battery has been approved to be replaced. Also recommend that customer does not Supercharge on a regular basis and does not charge to 100% on a regular basis. We also recommend that the customer use scheduled charging to start charge 3 hours after end of drive at low SOC.”
Run your battery down low, don't plan on supercharging it or even recharging it normally unless you've got at least a couple hours slack in your schedule. Want to have maximum range immediately available on a regular basis . . . maybe you need to rethink that.

Norm,

There's nothing new in that. Very rarely would a "normal" customer repeatedly deep cycle an EV battery. Tesloops (the owners of the vehicles in question) is basically a 24-hr taxi service that runs the cars to near zero, recharges them, and runs them again. They were using the Tesla Superchargers almost exclusively to charge their vehicles (they were free, so why not?).

Consistent deep cycling can impact the life of most battery chemistries, including lithium ion. Even so, to only have two warranty replacements in over 300,000 mile? Ok.

Now, where I think you are absolutely correct is from the perspective of someone who may want to track a battery electric car, the idea of running it to near zero, fast charging the battery, then rinse and repeat will be taxing on the vehicle's battery. Just like running multiple laps, cooling down, rinse and repeat can be taxing on a vehicles braking and cooling systems. In both cases it's one thing to do something like that periodically. It's a completely different ballgame to do that every day (Tesloops). I'm impressed they only had two warranty replacements.

At the end of the day, though, I imagine most people who are serious track rats will have ICE or hybrid vehicles instead of BEVs going around the track. Drag strip? That's a different story. BEVs should shine there.

Seems to me Mary Berra wants to kill everything with a combustion engine in it and go Electric and build a bunch of cars for women.
