On second thought, perhaps I answered my own question with that.

But but the Torrent GXP had comparable acceleration to a Porsche Cayenne!

-GM actually tried to advertise this once. Not even kidding.

And then that would mean that the equivalent Chevrolet Equinox did as well.

Meanwhile now you get...

AKA an actual decent lineup of mid-luxury products with an insane overseas market and high ATPs. Oh, that's profitable too.

Fair nuff. Pontiac had many failures. Let me rephrase that. I miss the Trans Am.

Buick has been rather mundane for decades and hasn't changed one bit. Somehow the Chinese just like ugly. Maybe Pontaic should re emerge as a Buick Aztec, that ought to fix em. Pontiac did have the GTP which was a realtively nice car and in the small car market the Grand Am was light years better than the comparable Toyota and Datsun (Corolla and Sentra). Pontiac did make a few decent cars such as the Trans Am. We'd be looking at a new one soon if they had killed Buick instead of Pontiac.

We'd be looking at a division losing money hand over fist because Chevrolet sold the exact same products, just in greater volume.

Maybe Pontiac should just stay dead and buried. There's no room for another brand at GM.

If GM had differentiated Pontiac enough from the other brands, and kept it's performance image from the '60s and early '70s, Pontiac would have been successful.

GM's actions ruined Pontiac.

And if not for the Chinese the Buick would also be dead because it is worse than Pontiac by a substantial margin. The Buick may as well be a Camry.

Even without China, Buick would still be a better proposition than Pontiac. It's a mid-luxury brand which commands higher ATPs and translates into better profitability.

Pontiac sold unprofitable rebadged Chevrolets. G6s were relegated to rental fleet queen status, G3 and G5 were jokes, and let's not even begin to talk about the Torrent.

Like I said, the entire concept of Pontiac is shoveling money into a pit and lighting it on fire.
