Especially if the garage has access to the house, and even if it was unattached, I'd never start it up with the garage door closed no matter how long it runs before opening the door and pulling it out. Five times a week, year after year, the accumulation of bad stuff in your lungs adds up....and for what? Some selfish neighbor's beauty sleep?....

Maybe if I was younger and renting I wouldn't care, but I own and plan on living here for a long time so I'd like to get along with my neighbors. "

This is very easy to do and will satisfy the neighbors.

Honestly don't understand some of the comments telling neighbors to F' OFF... Childish

So, a little digging has revealed that light vehicle (includes our Camaros) exhaust noise level is measured according to Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) test procedure J1169 (May 1998). The max is 95 db. This is measured "at a steady state". I did not buy the document, so I don't know how many rpm or what the steady state is exactly, but it would be interesting to see if someone had a db meter and could measure our Camaros at startup from the same distance, angle, etc., that the gov't does, just to see how loud it is.

The point I am making is that the feds do not measure the db level at start up at all, so the bark our cars make when we start them may well exceed that 95 db.

Just something to think about.

I don't like the anonymity of the letter. It could be one person or many.

I try and respect my neighbors within reason.

A stock exhaust is not necessarily "legal" when it comes to noise laws.
Every municipality/city/town can have its own noise ordinances.
I guarantee you that GM does not actively survey the literally tens of thousands of local regulations for noise laws across this country.

A neighbor may be able to file an action under the covenant of quiet enjoyment or nuisance. Many municipalities have regulations regarding the quiet enjoyment of real property and your HOA may have parameters in place. There are different levels of nuisance laws (public vs. private).

If HOAs are going to start dictating what kind of car you can own that's encroaching on the Constitution.

HOAs dictate if you can have an American flag or how big it can be, how many flowers you can have on your patio, how many cars you can park in your driveway, when you can sneeze..... it's ridiculous. And people PAY for this???

It can definitely help with home values. Some people don't care about that but I do which is why I gladly pay HOA fees quarterly.

I start my car on Stealth mode and I've never had a problem with my neighbors.

No neighbor (I don't care if it's the President) is worth risking any kind of possible personal harm, whether it may seem ridiculous or not.

I'd start the car in stealth mode with garage door open and leave it at that. That's the best I can do. Kindness and understanding go both ways.

Stealth Mode but Garage Door Open = Meeting halfway with your neighbors

There are plenty of neighborhoods where home values are solid that don't require HOAs. There's million dollar homes right around the corner from me that don't require HOAs. I think that's a facade, an illusion. If you need an HOA to keep home values up maybe you're not looking at the right neighborhoods. It's a waste of money where that money can actually be put towards an even nicer house.

HOAs are perfect for the people who would call the cops and complain about every little nagging thing their neighbors do........

Oh, wait a minute

Home owner here and I have an asshole neighbor that is not into cars and practically hates me lol. I only have a 2 car garage and 4 cars. Before I sold my 09 G8 gxp (headers exhaust cam) it sat outside and was LOUD af on startup. He would give me evil eye and tbh I could care less, I intentionally revved it (if it were after 8am and before 9p). Yes he called the cops on me multiple times too lmfao. I decided to then add longtubes and looking to get a Corsa for my Z06. People like this and the one harassing the op can kiss my *ss. I'm sorry/not sorry if a loud exhaust is the extent of your problems but it sounds like a personal problem to me and not mine (or the op's). Better invest in cotton swabs for his ears lol. I'll be damned if I'm pulling off my exhaust or quieting my car for some jerk.

Thank you. What people like that simply don't understand is that it's America. You do your thing, and we'll do our thing too. Mind your business and I'll mind mine. If you're not committing serious crimes I don't care what you do and you shouldn't care what I do.
