Vintage ---- You're taking this better than I would, not so much the failure, that unfortunately happens, but the part of the delay on the teardown. It would have me fuming, IMO there is no reason to take so long to make a decision, regardless of a teardown.

Thanks - I am trying to behave and not overreact. However, I am less than 24 hours from losing it as they will have had 2 working weeks to tear down the engine.

Have the techs even taken the valve covers off to look for a broken valve spring or dropped the oil pan looking for a spun main bearing or something along those lines? I hope it all works out.

UPDATE - message left for me this morning by my service advisor. I have called back and now we are playing phone tag. However, this is the message "we got into your motor and the #3 piston is broke; now we are waiting on GM to tell us what to do." That's it, no other information at this time for you folks but as soon as I speak with him I will let you know.

What should I ask about a "broke piston," which makes no sense to me but I am no mechanic? Does he mean rod came loose - if just the piston "broke" then I think it would keep running just with a little less power?

Regardless, I am hoping GM says fix it under warranty. Now, assuming that happens, is it really as simple as dropping in a new piston. I mean, the car stopped running on track. Sorry for rambling.

Service advisors aren't usually very tech savvy...so who knows what that means. It's just way to broad of a statement. All I know is if this was major damage, and metal shavings went all over the motor, I would want a new motor...not just a partial repair.

Thats not a very good description by the service advisor. As you indicated was it a due to a rod failure, piston ring failure, damaged due to valve strike or dropped valve, etc.

UPDATE 2 - I have now spoken with SA. "The #3 piston let go and dropped. When that happened, it destroyed the motor and you need a new motor. We have submitted a request that you receive a new motor under warranty and we are waiting to hear from Chevy. We do not know why it failed and it does not appear that you did anything - there is no way to tell why it broke."

I continue to be hopeful. Please remember that this happened at about 4k rpm in 2nd gear while accelerating. Strange and uncommon but not unheard of apparently.

Piston dropped or valve spring broke (valve dropped) taking out the piston?

All good signs by the advisor… Everybody's right ....they're just not technical, so far it sounds like you're getting taken care of. Nothing out of the ordinary so far from GM.

With no signs of abnormal operation by you, which is documented, GM is not about to give you a hassle on this. Stuff like this can end up on YouTube. And They certainly don't want that with the new introduction. It may be another week before The warranty expense goes up and down the chain, to get approved. Not abnormal.

Sounds like things are headed in the right direction. Hopefully it's back together by your next track day!

Agreed - can they just swap me a new 1LE? I know, I know, I am getting ahead of myself but I just want to drive and at this rate it will be another month before I am back in a car with a different motor than original. I will be grateful if the warranty request is approved - just ready to DRIVE!

They will not give you a new car. They will replace the engine. Unless for some reason they can't get that engine......

You may want to talk to the service manager after the repairs are complete about a "trade assist" with GM, then they would get you a new car, but you'd pay some money for using the car so far .....etc,etc.

Keep in mind you'll likely not be getting a new-new LT1..you'll be getting a certified rebuilt LT1 (if past history is any indication).
