I’ll go ahead and be the guinea pig for everyone else. 5/18 build 20k miles and it’s going until at least 2028 when warranty is up until it gets a katech. Have 2020MY OEM pump if absolutely necessary in meantime but I’m gonna call the pot with my hand gentleman. Obviously will keep informed but after monitoring this thread and my own experiences im not as worried as some others

So to be clear, you have a 2020 pump in the vehicle, or the 2020 pump is on the shelf just in case??

I would say these pumps just aren't as robust as they should have been, certainly not like a Katech pump.

GM also change the oil viscosity change to 0W40 in 2019. No explanation was ever given for that. I changed my 2017 over to 0W40 at 15,000 miles. I never had an issue, till I chickened out and swapped out my pump for a Katech pump at 40,000 mile.

My car was fine until I changed the oil per their ZLE track prep sheet.

I took it to the dealer who had a chevy service engineer come out. He stated I installed the oil filter wrong and put the wrong oil in it. They did an oil change and sent me on my way. I said it was BS and the car was not fixed but was told nothing more would be done.
I didnt realize at the time what was really happening, which was that they were effectively voiding the warranty.
When the pump finally gave out Chevy customer service said I f%cked it up when i installed the oil filter wrong and put the wrong oil in it. They offered to pay 5k but only if a chevy dealer would do the repair, but the chevy dealer would not touch the car unless it was to replace the entire engine.
I had Wragth repair it. They pulled the engine, there were metal shards from the blades in the pump breaking up in the pan and main oil passage from the pump.
The main bearings were worn through the babbitt, but the rod bearings were OK. the Main bearings were replaced and I went with a Katech pump along with a cam install.

I would say coincidence, its unlikely a fresh oil change would cause the oil pump to break. I think it was just time that yours finally gave up the ghost.

Probably so, but I wonder if the heavier 15w50 could have changed anything (or he did say wrong oil, so I'm assuming here also)

I suspect the pump was a bad one, but I think it was the 15-50 that destroyed it.
