High RPM grinding/shudder noise
Solved- see post #11
Hi guys, I noticed recently on my 2016 SS A8 that if I hold 1st or 2nd gear to about 5000 RPM , I start hearing grinding noise/vibration from the engine bay-passenger side. Is it normal ? Does not happen at other gears.

It does not happen on my 2016 SS A8. I'd take it to the dealer and have them take a look.

That's just your torque vector...nothing to worry about.

The torque vectoring feature on the SS is active in competitive driving mode only and is really more of brake-assisted steering than actual torque vectoring.
As to the noise experienced by the OP, I think we have enough members here with V8's and A8's who would be willing to push 5000 rpm's in 2nd gear and report back their experiences. I expect the noise is not the norm. |

I'm trying to do more reading:
Could it be torque converter shuddering ? If so, should I be worried about it?

I think you have the right idea by doing an informal poll of members here. If you get even 2 or 3 more members with automatics here who experience the (presumably abnormal) vibrations you describe the internet will light up!

I just had my torque converter replaced last week... when it starts to go bad, you will get a hesitation when cruising around 45-60 almost like you are in too high of a gear. It was a good vibration/hesitation and when you played the gas at all it went away.

Bumping this subject to find out if anybody has this problem on 1st or 2nd gear/ high RPM. I still have this issue, car did not blow up yet...

Get it checked out by your dealer. Take the service person for a ride and show it to them otherwise they'd write it off instantly and not bother checking

Sounds right. I almost feel like going to test drive a new Camaro SS and see if it has the same noise...

Update:
Just came back from the dealer. They confirmed that there's a noise, however it's normal. They said it's the exhaust system vibrating under certain rpm ( not the infamous NPP rattle). We also test drove a new turbo 4 (A8) and is had a similar noise at 2nd gear around 5000 rpm. Case closed
