I break in with regular oil then switch to synthetic at 1500 or 2000 miles. But more modern engines may not need this, but that's what I do.

I'm using semi-synthetic during the 1500 mile break-in then going full synthetic after break-in.

Full-synthetic after first factory change at 2k miles.

Dealer used Mobil 1 for the Chevy Complete Care service that I just had done last Saturday even tho filler cap says Dexos (semi syn).

the new Dexos Oil is now considered a full synthetic oil.

Check out www.gmdexos.com.

Dexos 1 is for gas, 2 diesel.

Dexos 1 can be full-syn (e.g. Mobil 1), but must be semi-syn minimum.

Per the manual, Dexos 2 is also for track days.

GM dealers use a generic "Dexos 1" 5w-30 oil by the 55 gallon drum...it used to be a blend...it is now full synthetic.

Modern engines have extremely tight tolerances that do not require "break in" oils like they used to. I believe factory fill is Mobil 1...but I could be wrong about that...in any event, to answer your question: The car uses synthetic oil.

More specifically...ensure any oil you put in the car for regular use meets Dexos 1 certification AND is 5w-30 for regular driving.

If you visit the track...use a 0w-40, or 5w-40 oil...preferably Dexos 2 certification. If you can't find that Mobil 1 15w-50 (change asap after track day), and Valvoline SynPower 5w-40 were both called out specifically as good substitutes.

Put nothing but synthetic in your car... why would you consider putting anything but.??????

Logic is what?

Did you change the oil that came in the car with semi-synthetic, if so which oil did you use. I am at 550 miles and thinking about doing a semi-syn change and then a full-syn change at 1200 miles. Thanks for any help!

Smile Pennzoil Platinum Euro 0W40

Pennzoil Platinum Euro 0W40 ($22.48/5qt jug) and PF64 oil filter ($6.14) at walmart. I didnt even need an oil filter wrench to remove the old filter, hand spun right off, even the 15mm drain plug came out easily. Just less than 10 quarts drained but have had 30 mls drain from the catch can over the past 3500 miles. Engine sounds much quieter with this oil.

I'm thinking about running amsoil signature series in this car just like the rest of my previous cars. Now I kinda run into a problem because I see that they are compliant with dexos gen 1 but I don't see the dexos gen 2.

Dexos gen 2 is not to be confused with dexos2 as they are different. I just don't want to void my warranty over something as stupid as an oil change

That depends on if you plan on tracking your car. Dexos2 is only specified in the manual if you do. Regular use Dexos1 is acceptable.

Good News!!

The manual stated to use a Dexos2 5w-40 oil for track use...OR...Valvoline SynPower MST 5w-40...well guess what?! The Valvoline 5w-40 is now Dexos2! (And currently 5.19/qt at NAPA)

Didn't realize till I picked up the bottles, today!
