I don't know if u remember learning stick. But given how many times I have taught people I can confidently say that a 455 lb-ft car is not an easy car to learn stick on.

I learned to drive in a manual 1994 Eagle Talon (Mitsubishi Eclipse) but unfortunately that was the last manual car in my family. Went with the A8 on my Camaro as it's both my main vehicle and my fiancee is nervous enough driving, if she ever had to drive the Camaro no way could she drive a manual.
I've been flirting with the idea of picking up a cheap used Mazda Miata MX-5 with a manual to satisfy both a convertible and manual car. As Richard Hammond on Top Gear once said, "The MX-5 has to be in the list of top-5 all-time gear changes... if there ever was such a thing."

When I was a kid, we had a field full of old cars that were ours to play with, until we killed them. We used them as bumper cars and once the last auto was dead, if I still wanted to play, I had to learn. My 2 older brothers idea of "teaching" me was to just keep bumping into me until I figured out how to get out of the way. I had to alternate between being able to see and being able to push in the clutch. I think I was maybe 10 or 11.
Definitely trial by fire, but by the time it was actually legal for me to drive, I could hop in anything and go. |

Well actually while up shifting if you hold the clutch too long it won't let the rpms go lower than it should. (With rev match on)

I can't drive a stick.. I have tried numerous times and boy I wish I could imagine the gas you would save... and if you ever needed a new one just go pick it up off the ground or snap it off a limb! Hell sticks are everywhere! Heh.. that was bad I know.. I learned to drive a manual on my first truck I bought. Bought it Dallas and just kinda figured it out while stalling a few times on the way home, now I did have a little experience with some tractors/ 4 wheelers and a bikes so it wasn't completely foreign to me. It's funny though how many people I know that just can't drive a manual. Back when I had my Jeep I would like to mess with my new employees and toss em the keys and tell them to move my Jeep to the back of the parking lot. Some of them would sit out there for 45 minutes or more and never could get it to crank lol. I'd say 1/20 could actually drive a manual that's pretty crazy considering I believe overseas they make you learn to drive a manual as part of your driving test.

I have driven manual transmissions for over 40 years and would not have bought a gen 6 if a manual wasn't available. My wife and four sons can drive a manual in an emergency but in general have no interest.
When in Italy a few months back - every vehicle I saw, rode in and even my rental was a manual. In fact the rental would have been $600 more if I had wanted an auto transmission.

I learned how to drive stick when a friend who worked for Pepsi (maintenance) taught me in a 3500 utility body Pepsi truck. At the time I worked for Napa (part time). They had one older stick shift delivery truck that if I got a chance to deliver parts, I always took that one. My brothers truck was stick and his girlfriend's car (when I was a teen) was stick, they used to let me borrow their cars all the time. My first car was a 87 Z28, auto, however when I joined the Navy (at 22) I bought a 92 Accord LX with 5spd (kept the Camaro in a garage). Before buying this '16 Camaro 6spd, I had not really driven a stick car for 8 years. I can't lie, I stalled a few times and the Hill Assist threw me off big time until I realized what was happening.

I learned to drive a manual when I bought my first car(a 1979 Chevy Monza, 4 cylinder/4 speed) when I was 15. My drunk uncle gave me a 1/2 hour "lesson" and then I just figured it out on my own after that. My daughter's first car was a 5 speed Honda Civic Hatch. She still loves driving stick shift and will not even consider buying an automatic. When the time comes for my son to buy his first car, it will be a manual as well. In my opinion, being able to drive a manual transmission effectively is a necessary life skill.

I drove a stick all my life. Now I am just sick of them. Love my automatic. Plus I'm getting older with sore knees.

I've been driving stick for about 17 years now. Learned loosely on an old Isuzu when I was a kid, but didnt get my first stick until 17 years ago, a honda civic. Then drove stick non stop until about 5-6 years ago. I took 5 years off with my last car an Tiptronic 2.0t A4. I liked the break from shifting for the first few years, but the last year or two I missed it. I would beat on the tiptronic hard to get the feel of a manual again. Hence why i got my SS in a M6. Glad im back to a manual car....at least for the next few years until I get sick of it again or get something that doesnt come in stick.

Right there with ya. First car was an old 4-speed ehem Mustang..... and had various stick shifts over the years, but with traffic and a bad knee I think it is time for the Auto.
