I think it's helpful to simply run the numbers on some scenarios. For example, let's assume the following:

Price of New BMW = $75,000
Potential Trade Value of ZL1 = $62,000
Potential Sale Price of ZL1 = $70,000
My State Vehicle Tax Rate = 6.25%

Trade Scenario - You've got a $13,000 price difference. You pay tax on that amount only. Your out of pocket cost is $13,812.

Sell Scenario - You pay the $5k price difference between new and old car and pay tax on the full price of new car. Your out of pocket cost is $9,687.

That's a $4,125 difference. Not saying that's good or bad. Just something to weigh out. If you don't want to wait for a sale or deal with the hassle of a sale, it might be worth it. If you're only looking at the bottom dollar, a sale is the clear winner.

KBB doesnt list any value

Not taking to Carmax ever, they suck from previous experience

I am quite surprised to see the unreal values quoted by forum members, these cars are in demand since production stopped and should fetch high values, i trade in cars always and never had a bad experience

Out of curiosity, I contacted Texas Auto Value to see what they would offer for my Rapid Blue 2023 ZL1 A10 with 3100 miles. Their offer was $68k which is more than I expected.

In this post pandemic world, the top trims of mustang, camaro and challenger are holding their values extremely well. That’s why I told him mid 60’s. Now 68 is awfully high just like the asking prices that he’s seeing so I’m surprised by that.

Prepandemic zl1’s held their values just as terribly as the SS. You could legit get a 2 year old zl1 from a dealer in 2019 for mid 40’s. Now that same 2017 zl1 retails 55k. The 2021+ still retails for mid 60’s -70’s depending on year. 19 and 20’s are finally dropping to high 50’s-low 60’s.

I’ve been shopping for a s197 gt500 but can’t quite come to grips with how much value my 23 2ss 1le has lost. If I could go back I would have ordered a zl1. I’m honestly surprised at how well the top trims have been holding value the past couple years compared to how much they would lose value pre2020.

Not even close. You are comparing what older ZL1s sold for to what a 2023 would sell for. The only 2023 on that site was a convertible that sold for $74,500 16 months ago.

I wasn't suggesting you sell to Carmax, just get an offer. My point is that I'd get as many offers as possible to help your negotiations with the BMW dealer. I've found it extremely helpful to have offers in hand when negotiating trade-in value.

For the average American right now, the "economy" is NOT great, the "niche" car market has cooled very considerably... Not a lot of disposable income out there for unnecessary items (no one "needs" a Camaro SS 1LE and it certainly is not a "practical" car)... Just because it isn't in production anymore (there is a reason they stopped, not a lot of demand) doesn't mean it is worth more...

Not sure what your "tax situation" is that you need to sell your car and buy a BMW, but I honestly think you'll lose more on the trade/sale than you will save in "tax savings"...

My guess is you'll get an offer for around 60k for a 1 year old car.
Used car values have dropped. My guess is everyone's broke right now with the rampant inflation.

Take it to the dealership to get thier trade in offer and report back.
I'm not selling, but I'd like to know what they offer you.

Agreed but carmax low balls your offer and so not wasting time again

Already have 68K and 69K offer as of today from dealers good enough to negotiate with BMW , interested to see how much they offer trade in price.
