6.2 V8 and issues with AFM(Active Fuel Management)
I have a friend who is an A level mechanic at a GMC dealer who sees a lot of warranty (and out of warranty) work coming thru the shop on 6.2 equipped Sierras and Yukons due to significant lifter problems caused by AFM(Active Fuel Management) also known as cylinder deactivation. He asked that I post this because his friend just shelled out $115 (K) large for a Cadillac Blackwing with the LT4 and 10 speed auto. Awesome car.
I don't know the extent of the problem with Camaro6, C7 and C8 Vettes that have auto trannys. Are there preventive measures one can take if they have a AFM vehicle before having to have it torn apart ? Will more frequent oil changes help? I feel fortunate that my manual trans equipped Camaro6 hasn't got it- just Direct Injection. Not rubbing it in, mind you just curious and wishing luck to anyone with AFM. BTW, the Blackwing is available with a 6 speed. |

The issue is the lifters wear and will stick in the collapsed position. You have all the same components in your engine, it's just missing some wiring and the computer is not programmed to actuate it so the manual cars don't see the failures. The easy, pre-failure fix is to turn it off in the computer via HP Tuners, or get a Range device to deactivate it.

I installed a Range device on my car at 1500 miles and it will never be removed unless absolutely necessary for warranty work. The fuel savings are minimal and certainly not worth the risk of lifter failure, imho.

I have a range plugged in 24/7 and it will only come out after the car gets a real tune. Headers and boltons are in the very near future.

4 easy steps to fix this:
Step 1: Remove factory cam and lifter junk with VCM Step 2: Install new cam and lifter set sans VCM Step 3: Throw factory cam and lifter set into trash Step 4: Happy motoring

Direct Injection (compared to Port Injection) is just the location of the fuel injectors. As someone else posted above, you have the same AFM parts (cam and lifters) as an automatic car however the AFM software is not enabled/installed so the deactivation does not occur with the manual.

Unfortunately/fortunately?, the LT4’s have the junk but not the brains to make the junk work, so it’s only half junk if you know what I mean.

This should be pinned. Although many are aware of the issue, some are not.

I have had a used 2015 C7 Z51 for about a year with a A8 that was never touched or had the triple flush and it works like a dream. Only thing it has done is the hard shift out of park in super hot weather last summer . Not done it in many months and when the mid 90's come back i will see if it does it again. Just beats me why so many A8's were bad and a few never had a prob. Had three C6's and never a prob with the A6. |

The same junk, AFM blah blah blah, is in the 5.3L that is in the Silverado I now have. Followed olrocker's 1-4 directions to the T. So at 150K, when it was given to me by my Dad, figured was good time to overhaul the engine and get rid of that junk. Hopefully she goes another 2-300K

From that information my conjecture is the issue impacts cars used in areas with higher humidity much more severely than drier regions, which would explain why only a smaller but relevant subset of A8 units degrade to the point where the shudder becomes tangible.

Here’s a look at post failure, think it was best case failure scenario imo
I didn’t own the car when it happened so it’s all I got

That's unfortunate- just 10K miles and a lifter issue.
