888 or bust?
I have searched and scoured the forums and interwebz. The problem is that I've researched myself into going cross eyed and now I'm paralyzed. So, sorry to keep fishing in the empty barrel here...oh well, fight me if you're bumhurt.
I have a 2018 ZL1 M6. It makes just north of 700 to the tires, nothing wild but enough that I have a need for more traction. I want the best of all worlds, which doesn't exist. I love having car that is a true drivers car ie it brakes, handles and goes fast in a line. This car is a Saturday night special for me...weekends, weather permitting, and car shows. I will never use the car up to its potential on the 'ring. Is there a tire that's nice and sticky and not a true 'DR'? Like the NT01 for example? I'd like a tire that does the best overall of the following: Traction Noise Performance (not just in straight line powahh) Price (I'm fine at 888 $ if thats the verdict) Is the 888 double the tire? I don't know...maybe so. But if they both hook up and are going to get shredded anyways, why not buy the cheap ones? Knowing I'll never track it, I just need it to not spin in the 3k miles per year I'll drive it... 1 - TOYO PROXES R888R 315/30/20 2 - Atturo Az850Dr Drag Radial Tire 315/30R20 PFA - Thank you, and commence the shizertalking. Tell me why you like the tire you have, is it too noisy, does it not matter because the traction is glorious, etc. Thank you! |

If you can compromise on road noise... I think you will be very happy with the R888R's

Why not give the Nitto NT555RII a fighting chance? It has great traction for the mere 700-ish rwhp that you (and I) deal with, and having had those R888Rs, unfortunately the innocuous "road noise" term in the above posts is quite the understatement---think monster truck with chunky a** tires whining to the extent that it's hard to carry a conversation in the car.
Now, I'm sure there are people whose engines are so loud they can't hear the R888Rs over that or simply don't care, but you said your Camaro was a Saturday night special, and as such, I'd imagine you may often have a passenger, too. The other thing in my experience with the R888R is that it was better than the PS4S in straight line dry traction, but not worlds better, for example I couldn't just mash the throttle from a dig even when I aired the tires down to 24-25 psi. I understand it's okay to go below that on a drag strip, but then again, you didn't state that as one of your goals.

Thank you so much man, this is great information. I was looking at those also. Are those more of a road course tire and not purely a drag tire? I ran the NT05R on my LSA G8 previously and for straight line mashability they were really impressive. If the 888 is as loud as I keep hearing I don't think I want that. You nailed it on my usage, I think you're spot on. |

I have had both the Nitto RII's and the r888r's.
I just could not get the Nitto's to hook, the r888r's work better for me. I only ran them on the rear and never really noticed any more noise from them.

Well, either our sensitivity thresholds are very different, or the Nittos are noisier than people care to admit... I only had the R888Rs and I maintain they aren't what one wants for a fun weekend car.
