Angry 23'Camaro 2SS1LE Camshaft issue

I started hearing ticking noise from engine bay after starting the vehicle two days back so took it to the dealership. They said camshaft has been damaged but car has only 4K miles. They ordered the part and said it will be fixed under warranty.
Should I be worried that this happened within the first one year of purchase and please advise whether I need to ask the dealership to check/replace anything else that might have been damages b/c of this issue.

Appreciate the help!

Wow, that's disconcerting to hear. Do you track the car? What oil do you use and has it been changed in those 4K miles?

I didnt track the car. First Oil change was done at the dealership around 500 miles.
The ticking noise started just two days back.

Sorry to hear. Hopefully everything else in your engine is alright. Man I am seeing way too many issues on these boards and the FB groups with the 2020+ cars. I do not feel good about keeping mine long term.

If there is damage on a cam lobe I’d imagine they are also at the very least replacing that lifter.

Definitely!
It will take a month for them to fix it(swamped with more repairs is the reason)
They are replacing camshaft and lifters.
I’m hoping that the replacement parts are not defective ones as I read somewhere that GM replaces damaged camshaft with new ones from same manufacturer.

The cam isn’t usually what’s defective. It’s the lifters. The lifter messed up the cam. While not super common, it’s also not uncommon unfortunately.

The Dealership opened up the engine and noticed thrust bearing started to fail. Metal debris throughout the engine. Ordered a new engine and has been replaced under warranty. took 3 months to get the car back from them.

That sucks. Hope all is taken care of. I have a 2021, built 10/1/2020 and is a M6. Back then I had to worry about the valve springs being bad from a bad batch affecting July- September cars, Camaros and vettes. I have a tech friend check the car I was buying and no recalls or tsb’s, so lucky. I to have a ticking sound but that’s fuel injection noise in the rails, my fifth gen had same. 15000 miles on the car and over three years of autocross 1-2 gear high rpm use and no issues nor any oil consumption.

Guess it was a Wednesday built car..lol

That sucks to hear man. Since I plan on keeping it long term this kinda makes me want to get an aftermarket camshaft since my warranty is already voided lol.

I’m guessing your cam got chewed up so much metal bits got onto the thrust bearing (and most likely the rest of the bearings).

Thrust bearing starting to fail at 4k/mi is a giant (?). One has nothing to do with the other. While metal bits floating through the engine would be bad, it doesn’t just pick on the thrust bearing. I have a LT1 engine in my garage with barely 12k/mi on it (not from my car) thrust bearing was completely sheared off and spun. I’m doing a full 360 thrust bearing on my engine. While the thrust bearing on my car was fine, I did note it seemed to be wearing excessively. The Main bearings were all perfect, just the rear thrust seems to be getting beat up. My car is a manual but I don’t track mine. 17k/mi in 5 years of ownership. The other engine was out of an auto. Never tracked either. Thrust was completely chewed off and spun around the main into the block & cap material.
