I can confirm now: The brakes are not being looked at when registering a car from out of state in CA.
1) Bought my 2022 ZLE new in SD and got it shipped to my home address. 2) Drove it for about 400 miles with the SD temp dealer plates on to run things in. You should do that to be sure to pass CA smog. 3) Smogged it at some random gas station and did Pass. 4) Filled out the paperwork and took the car and paperwork to the DMV 5) DMV did a VIN verification for free 6) Showed the title application, smog cert, vin verification and GM paper which confirm the car to be 50 state emission compliant 7) Paid an huge amount of taxes and fees, got my papers and plates right at the DMV. Done. No replacement of brake stuff necessary. I'm going to replace pads (and fluid) soon though, as the brakes started to fade on some sporty downhill backroad driving already.. :/ |

Thank you for the clarification, when I was considering purchasing one of these it was a concern to find one in CA.

Just wanted to add another confirmation data point here. I also bought a ZL1 out of state without the copper free brakes.
The dealership took care of the registration for me but I still had to do a smog test + VIN verification on my own. It took about 500 miles of driving for the readiness monitors to be set for smog - didn't get the evap monitor to be set but that specific one is optional. VIN Verification did not even look at the brakes, just the emissions sticker which should say California LEV-160 or something like that. I then sent the paperwork of both back to the dealership and they did the rest for me. The dealership collected sales tax at the time of purchase. California will give you credit for taxes paid to another state, just make sure you have proof of the taxes paid (ex. sales agreement/bill of sale) if you are going to take care of registration on your own.

I bought a new Fiat 124 Spider 3 years ago in MO. The dealer collected no CA DMV or sales tax whatsoever. He gave me a Certificate of Origin, and a temporary MO plate. I took the C of O to the CA DMV after I drove the car all the way from Kansas City. The DMV then collected their fees, plus sales tax, and issued a title and vehicle registration.
My buddy here bought a new Stingray in Nebraska at MSRP a few months ago. He had the same exact experience as me. All these cars now, as far as I know, are 50 state compliant as far as smog stuff. |

I agree that the copper-free pads will very probably not be a DMV/Registration criteria.
From my personal experience: LT1 cars have a CA-specific front caliper and f/r pads ZL1 cars have CA-specific f/r pads

Get one with the copper free. Brakes. I just did a swap of a 22 into my 19 m v6 and they are vet z51 brakes. Swap out the pads for coper ones for even better braking. The calipers and pads are larger to compensate for the reduction of heat with copper but an upgrade when non coper.

Copper free brakes are Blackwing size, why in the world would you mess with them.

Just want to add. There is ZERO INSPECTION OF THE BRAKES AT DMV! I had my ‘24 ZL1 delivered to me here in Murrieta, CA from Doug Smith Chevrolet in Spanish Fork, UT on Nov. 3. Drove it for about 300 miles to get the OBII to register. Got it smogged(PASSED) went straight to DMV after in Temecula. Pulled in to VIN Verification lane. They looked and VIN# and verified info. Took 5 minutes. Went back inside and paid my registration and they handed me my actual plates right there! Took a total of an hour. There is NO INSPECTION OF BRAKES OR ANY OTHER EQUIPMENT.

He means these pads are larger and require larger rotors as well, for no improvement at all, because copper free pads are less powerful (that's why sizes had to be bumped a bit to retain absolute braking performance). So I think the point is why you'd want to spend $$ for no performance gain whatsoever.

That's quite possible, I haven't researched these pads just yet. Honestly, however, this is the top 0.5% of braking performance I will hardly ever need... but you may
