Track rotors and pads advise
Currently I'm running ZL1 stock rotors with Ferodo pads (DS1.11).
What is everyone's rotor upgrade of choice? looking for a little more brake to help late brake and set up the corners. Last edited by bptuner; 04-23-2023 at 08:30 AM. |

I upgraded the ZL1 calipers with vented brake pistons, silicone HI TEMP brake piston boots and stainless steel brake lines using WILWOO EXP 600 DOT4 brake fluid. I even CERAKOTE the calipers to handle the intense heat I was seeing on track days (about 450 degrees at the caliper). The YOUTUBE video BELOW in my signature is that EXACT set up at the track. THAT time is ALMOST a full second FASTER than the FAST time listed in the ROAD COURSE section for Eagles Canyon Raceway - 2.7 CCW Config - Decatur, TX. That is ALOT of difference and that is specifically what allows me to top 135MPH on the back straight PRIOR to braking for the 90 degree corner (you can see it on the video). Basically its what allows me to brake LATER than everybody else.

Loved my Hawk DTC’s. Trying G-locs next weekend at VIR after hearing good things. hawks can be a little tough on rotors but I don’t have a comparison, but will soon. Stock rotors for now but I did buy some dBA replacement rings. Only experience I have is bedding the new G-locs. The ZL1 stops as good as I’d hoped coming out of a Z06. Also have the Cadillac ducts above.

Doesn't the zl1 and ss 1le come with brake ducts already? Are the blackwings just beefier?
Is there also a weight difference between giro rotors and dba?

The black wing ducts are wider and they have a scoop that that picks up air slightly below the bottom of the chassis.

Yes there is The girodisc rotors are only 28 pounds mainly because the girodisc rotor hats are much lighter. DBA are replacement rings for the standard ZL1 rotor hub

I see the giro disc rotors lose about a half inch of surface area but have slots and better cooling posts. ZR1 felt like I was gonna go through the wind shield, I want that type of feeling back.
the DS1.11's are about 50% worn maybe they are glazed, they feel good just not OMG good. some have recommended new brake lines?? spiegler lines. Last edited by bptuner; 04-23-2023 at 08:22 AM. |

I upgraded to the SS 1LE big brake kit because I was getting brake fade at some of the tighter tracks in my area. I also switched to Raybestos ST43 pads (expensive, but they really last) which was also a noticeable difference. I was already using Castrol SRF brake fluid, so the fade I was getting wasn't from overheating the fluid, but from the pads being overworked. The difference was better than I hoped as the brake fade is gone, but the brake power and feel is definitely better.
If making the choice, I do think the ZL1 caliper and rotor are worth the extra price and had I to do it over, I would go that route myself. The only thing I am unsure of is - do the ZL1 brakes allow an 18" rim?

The STOCK design relied heavily on the MASS of the rotor to help dissipate the heat during the braking process. The GIRODISC rotor has MORE cooling vanes and since it is almost 5 pounds lighter it DOES NOT require the same amount of energy to slow down or bring the rotor to a stop. STOCK ZL1 rotors are NON-DIRECTIONAL and GIRODISC rotors ARE directional with a different part number for the driver and passenger side rotors.

That would be incorrect. dBA rotors do not overheat more quickly than OEM. Where did you hear that?
