Dawn is not recommended for automotive paint. It will dry out the paint. Use a wash that's recommended for stripping wax, etc, for automotive paint. Otherwise, your steps are pretty close.
Here are the recommended steps for preparing paint for coating: 1. Prep/strip wash to remove old wax & coatings (something like Chemical Guys Clean Slate, not that I'd recommend Chemical Guys necessarily) 2. Iron Decontamination spray (Meguiar's Iron Removing Spray Clay or CarPro IronX) - makes the clay mitt step much easier 3. Clay mitt 4. Another prep wash 5. Cut & polish 6. IPA wipe down (50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol & water, Walmart carries a premixed solution from Mothers CMX or order your favorite brand on Amazon) 7. Now you're ready for your favorite coating

Interesting. Dawn was recommended as a great "stripper" a few years ago. Does the Iron Decom really work on a "new" car? I think last time I used Dawn and a clay mitt at the same time, then dried and went right to polish. After polish I think I washed and then coated (No alcohol.) I might have been doing it wrong but it came out great and lasted the 3.5 yrs I had the car.
This LT1 is a 2 yr lease, so probably overkill on the Advanced Graphene stuff, but if I still like it at the end of the least I'll likely buy it; might as well invest in it now. thanks for the info guys :-) |

Dawn was recommended to me several years ago as well. But it's not advisable any more. I'm sure some people still use it, but for a long term vehicle it's not a good idea.

Dawn will strip your weather stripping seals of oils and cause premature wear and drying out to them.
Yes Iron decon is useful on new cars as alot of ferris is around them on all the shipping around.

I have put on 2 coats of nexgen ceramic spray in the last 4-5 months. Started using armor all ceramic wash 2-3 months ago. Very happy with results. Also I got some tech shine I'm going to try out because it looks to be very easy to use. I drive it about 400 miles a week and wash it every 1-2 weeks.

I did a second coat of Adam's Advanced Graphene today. Easy to apply, not as stinky as I expected. I polished with Blackfire first, but I can still seem some swirls. Hopeful both coats harden and stay glossy. gonna wait another day before taking her out for a spin.
