Is this a fair price for a repair?

Hi there,

I just want to check something…appears my camaro is leaking a bit of oil, and I took it to a shop and the mechanic showed me it’s coming from the oil pan (in atleast 2 different places, around bolts too)

The mechanic said me he needs to re-seal the pan, and it’s 8-10 hours labour, around $1200 CAD (~$900 USD) Does this seem right to you?

Thanks!

That sounds extremely pricy to me. Could they not drop the pan an inch or two, clean everything up and re-install, or do they need to jack the engine?

In most modern cars there's dropping of the sub-frame involved. Sounds pretty normal to me.

For that price. I'd be 100% with a shop doing it. For the pan gasket u have to either lift the engine up or drop the subframe.

Sounds reasonable to me knowing the labor involved to do the job.

Theres a known issue with oil pan bolts not being torqued correctly from the factory. You might be able to fix it yourself by just torqing the oil pan bolts. Had this issue on mine. Fixed it in 5 min after it was up on stands. No leaks since.

I just tightened mine while under the car for a regular oil change but I have that capability and maybe you do not but in most cases we've seen with this problem your mechanic is overdoing it. With mine the bolts took about a half turn and it never leaked again.

Thanks for all the responses. I think first I’m going to try and get under it, and inspect the oil pan bolts myself.

I agree that you should check this yourself first. There have been multiple reports on the forum of people finding the bolts loose. Good luck and I hope that's all it is for you.

Loose pan bolts is a known issue. 9/10 you can just tighten them.
