Buy new now or wait?

Perhaps this is rhetorical, but I do ponder what’s best. Clearly things are different in the world post-covid, purchasing new and used cars are no exception. I’m often blown away how used cars are selling for more than new at MSRP. I’m in no hurry to have a car delivered, but I wonder what the market for a ZL1 will look like in the future. When you combine the existing thin availability with the knowledge that Camaro production is ending, as well as the increasing likelihood that society is moving away from ICE in favor of electric vehicles, I have to wonder just how much it’s going to cost to buy a pre-owned ZL1 5 years from now. If used costs more than MSRP today when cars are still rolling off the line, what’s the market going to look like 5 years from now when what’s out there is it, no more production, no additional cars. I think back to 2007 when I greatly wanted a 03-04 cobra. I thought they were expensive 15 years ago, instead, they are tremendously more expensive now, even though they are 15 years older and have tremendously higher mileage. I can’t help but think the same will happen with ZL1. So my question is, would I be better off putting an order in for a 2023 now and likely pay less for a brand new car then what I’m likely to pay 5 years from now for a used car? Clearly no one knows what the future holds, but if this is a glaring generally accepted likelihood, I’d rather consider before it’s too late.

Put in your order now if you want a ZL1, nobody outside gm is certain whether there will be a 2024 model year. Make sure you choose a competent dealer that has allocations and won't keep you hanging for a year before admitting they never had a chance.

The ZL1 is manufactured in a low enough volume now that it is likely to retain its value very well.

At my age, I don't have a lot of time to ponder. Most of my life is now in the rearview mirror. But anyway, I've been thinking about one last toy. Looked at Shelby GT500, Roush Stage 3, pre-C8 Corvettes. Decided to go new and the ZL1 won out for me. I like the fact there aren't tons of ZL1's running around. Now I'm just waiting..... Hoping I can still drive when it finally arrives.

I’d order one with the options you want from a dealer who’s willing to sell for no more than MSRP. If you’re waiting, you’re just missing out on enjoying the car. There aren’t likely to be any performance changes into 24.

Mine gets lots of compliments, especially since you don’t see one on every corner.

This times 100!!!!

I placed my order for a ZLE in August 2 2021 with a high volume dealer in my area and my car was just built 9/20 as a MY23. If you want a ZL1 do some research on a good dealer in your area and order ASAP

Thanks everyone for feedback. As far as waiting, what I’m getting at is I'm not in best position to make a purchase of this amount at this time. I could do it, but I’d prefer to wait a few years. What I’m trying to determine is, if I wait a few years it will be a bit easier to spend that kind of money, however if I'm still spending 65-70k on a used car perhaps it makes sense to spend same amount now and actually have a brand new one.

If you dont buy now you might not ever have the chance to get one new. There were a lot of people that ordered 2022's and never got them and hopefully had a good dealer put a 2023 allocation in.

ZL1's in a whole aren't produced in mass quantities and the 1LE option is even fewer especially with GM's Carbon Fiber Shortage.

If you don't have the means to buy one now, just plan on buying used in the next couple years or find a deal that does fit in your budget. There are deals out there but they go insanely quick because there is a large group of people out there looking for used ones.

Yeah, I've been pretty close to ordering a ZL1 1LE. Holding me back are a couple factors. I think there is likely to be a '24 with a special send-off package and I'd get that. Used car prices are going down fast and if there's an economic downturn in the next year used Camaro prices may drop and if so it seems like there's always used, low-mile ZLE garage queens for sale.

Main use for the car would be trailering to a track, HPDE or AutoX. ZLE is not as fast as my current SLE for AX and it costs A LOT of money to drive it on-track. A LOT.

Cayman/Boxster will be done after '26 and I might rather have a GTS or GT4 as I already have a SS 1LE. Corvettes will likely be available past 2030. I think in the long run I'd rather have a Vette or Cayman.

I’m in the same zone, however I believe that the last year, likely 2024, will be hard to get. If there is a final edition, it will likely be extremely limited considering how limited a ZLE is now. Getting the last, final edition would be ideal for future value and rarity - but are you willing to risk not getting one? Because current ZLE orders could even get pushed to 2024 - who knows.

I say don't wait.

I was lucky enough to get a 6 speed 2023 ZLE in transit that was unspoken for...at MSRP. (Was going to order one)

We know they are making limited 2023's...who knows if they will make 2024's.
