Houston Raceway 1/4 Mile Drag Strip in Baytown, TX Closing Permanently - Now 3/2023?
https://houstonraceway.com/news/2021...ational-event/
FYI...time to plan your final quarter mile run(s) before next April if you live in the area. I have only been there a few times but it is sad to see the facility closing. There are usually hundreds of people there on Friday nights for their legal street racing events. I'm worried that this will cause more illegal street racing. At least there is still an eighth mile drag strip on the Northeast side of the Houston metro area (HMP - Houston Motorsports Park: http://www.houstonmotorsportspark.com/wp/?page_id=1030) but I have never been since the shorter distance is less appealing to me. There was also a quarter mile drag strip in Sealy, TX owned by Hennessey about an hour west of downtown Houston but it is now closed to the public and does not offer rentals according to the website. I have heard the surface was not nearly as good as the Houston Raceway surface anyways. I guess NHRA and TX2K will not be coming to the Houston/Baytown area after next year unless a new drag strip is built. Last edited by cdrptrks; 03-22-2022 at 01:12 PM. |

Never went for grudge or TX2K, but watching the pro's was a lot of fun. That's a shame.

Sad, sad news for sure. My favorite track. Will try to get there as often as possible while it is still open. Maybe the CAPCO boys will build one ......

Yup another local and NHRA drag bites the dust. I'm not going to lay all this on NHRA but they make these track spend a lot of money to come up to there standards and its not cheap. To stay a float you need to run several days a week like our track does. They basically run every Wednesday night, Friday night, Saturday and Sunday from March till November if weather permits here in Missouri. Our track is a NHRA track and runs several divisional races for NHRA plus the NHRA national event in September. WWTraceway has really stepped up there program to make sure all these events are a success and the races really support this track since actually closed down at the end of 2010 and was reopened in 2012 under new owner ship and management. They also have a road course and oval which Nascar trucks run and Indy car. Hope its continues to thrive. I feel bad for the Houston area and like Atlanta, Firebird and others it leaves a void for the racers and that is sad.

Update: the lease has been extended through the end of 2022 and TX2K just announced that the lease was extended further for TX2K23 (presumably in March 2023). The track's website and the NHRA website both advertise the NHRA SpringNationals event next month as the final national level NHRA event they will host so March 2023 may end up truly being their last month of operation.
