Why does the camaro 6 Gen have a big and heavy stock muffler?
Hey Guys,
I've always wondered about this why does the camaro have an ugly heavy muffler that doesn't do anything useful meanwhile the 5th Gen has a more lightweight stock muffler that is easy to store can someone really explain this for me? |

I am curious how much it helps with aerodynamics?

Probably quite a bit. It directs air under the bumper cover rather than having the bumper cover act as a parachute.
I think this is a big reason why many mufflers are designed like this today, another reason is the larger muffler will be effective at lower frequencies, overall it may give the exhaust sound engineers more latitude to play with how the exhaust sounds. And yes, I'd be willing to bet every car mfg'er has engineers dedicated to making the car sound good. Probably more money into that than safety, lol... I also have a hard time believing the aftermarket exhaust vendors are not dealing with the aero issues getting rid of the stock muffler will create. |

I highly doubt, and I could be wrong, that aerodynamics become an issue with aftermarket exhaust until well over 100 mph.

Lets see my last on star report had me doing a lot of that at 132+ in the straight, all on the track guys so don't freak out, but have you ever been behind a car doing 65-75 MPH and you see there rear bumper flapping in the wind, i have lots of time so it starts lower then you think. |

I was thinking more along the lines if mpg. If that unit back there reduces turbulence and gains .1 mpg then that’s the reason right there. Why wouldn’t hey do it.

Fuel economy is a big deal for car companies, so if it save .5 mpg at highway speeds it's very significant. Only way to know for sure how much of an issue it is would be a wind tunnel or computer simulation though. OK, sorry about that. Lots of people accuse car companies of all sorts of crazy stuff. Maybe some of it's true, but I'd bet not a lot. |

That muffler has no effect on emissions.

Regarding the weight, I needed to drop the exhaust for my shifter change and it's a lot lighter than I thought it might be. I'd be surprised if the 5th gen mufflers (or aftermarket mufflers) are all that much lighter, but I'd love to see some data on this.
