I mounted my R888R's this past weekend and filled up with E85 (E60) to see how they'd do. I didn't launch from a dig, just made some highway pulls from 2nd on up.

The good...

First off, they grip and can handle the power well. First impression is that you need to get some heat in them but that's not actually the case. Once you burn off that new tire coating you realize how well they work. I've driven with them twice now on consecutive cold mornings (low 40's) and there's nothing to worry about. No need for a burn out to warm them up, they're fine even if you drive aggressively right off the bat. You can make them slip if you try, but it's predictable. I may need to play with my PSi a little bit to find their optimal inflation point for my car. Right now I've got them at 37 and the car doesn't feel as precise as it did back when I had my old Pilot Super Sports on. Much, much better than DR's though at highway speeds. No complaints with their performance.

The not-so-good...

Good God, they are LOUD - like tractor trailer loud. In all my life I've never owned a tire that's made this much road noise. Around town they're not bad, nothing to complain about. Take the car on the highway and you'll find yourself checking your rear view mirror to see if there's a fire truck behind you. The faster you go, it sounds like a siren. I took my son for a ride (sits in back) and I couldn't make out what he was saying to me unless he raised his voice. If you put the windows down, stereo turned up almost all the way, and NPP open with my ARH full long tube system - and you still hear the tires wailing. No exaggeration, I would not be surprised if a car driving next to me would hear them inside their cabin, even with their radio cranked up.

I'm not sure yet if I'd buy them again - leaning toward no right now. I'm definitely going to keep them until they're worn out and I'll probably try Sport Cup 2's next. Even with the Toyo discount code and price that I got them at, the R888R's are not so inexpensive that I'd say they're worth what you have to put up with. I definitely need to drive with them more to see if the good outweighs the bad. The "bad" though is really as bad as everyone says it is.

There was a 15% off code I believe just for the month of March from the manufacturer. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to link to a 3rd party site but I purchased through "simple tire". The code was TOYO15...not sure if it's still good though.

Good to know...maybe the noise will only be 1/2 as loud as I'm only running them in the rear.

I just did Pilot Cup 2's in 325-30-20 on the rear and make close to your power. These things don't slip. No noticeable noise either. Great tire. Are you concerned with the rear axles and the drap strip full power launch with launch control as I am?? lol. I don't think these Cup 2's are going to slip at all and therefore will 700HP shred axles?

Thanks, that's good to hear. I might sell these tires then before I put any real mileage on them and grab the Cup 2's. It's what I wanted to do originally and I should've gone with my gut...live and learn.

I don't have launch control on my car (2016 M6), but have spent many hours launching over multiple days launching with MT Street SS drag radials and everything still works fine. I never brought my car to the strip either and always turned off traction control, so I was still getting a little spin in 1st gear. I also didn't deflate down as far as I would've at a strip, so that's probably why I'm still ok. I just added a driveshaft loop for safety as insurance and figured I'd just replace the axles when/if they broke. So far so good, so no wasted $. I don't really launch at WOT anymore so I'm probably fine. I think my clutch will go before my axles do actually.

i got the r888r as well on front and back. They are loud but very sticky. I dont know how much pressure for the street? I have them 35 and 30 cold.

Are you running normal wheel offset spacing in the rear? If memory is right i think its plus 43. Did you have to do anything extra to get the rears to fit? My car is a 1le and it comes with 305 30 R20 in the back. Curious if they would work on my car.

^^^ The R888R is popular with the high hp C6 Vette guys. They handle great and offer better straight line traction compared to a standard performance street radial. I was considering these as well but was worried about the noise and wet/cold traction so I went with Michelin Pilot 4S. Great tire (very quiet and smooth) and well worth the money imo. Also, the R's are supposed to be quieter than the previous version (R888), so your comments on the road noise is interesting.

The reason is because we want a tire that can hook on the street and corner half way decent. Drag radials cannot corner due to the soft side wall.

If you have a better option, we’re all ears.

I am running the R888R's in the rear with 315/30/20. I can confirm how loud these are!
Around town they aren't bad, but above 60mph on the highway they are annoying!
At 85mph on a concrete highway these are ear plug worthy, and I have a trunk/rear seat full of dynamat and mass loaded vinyl!

Traction in 50-60 degree temps is pretty good. I am running rears at 32 psi cold.
I'm with the OP, due to the road noise, I'll probably try something different when these are due for replacement.

Although they look incredible on stock sized wheels.
