Factory undercoated?
I have a new to me 2023 1SS convertible. I bought it with only 2,700 miles on it. It is entirely coated underneath with a black spray on coating. Is that factory or did someone do that after sale? I'd rather it didn't have it since I won't be driving it in winter and it covers everything including electric wires and connectors. Ugh.

As stated above, this is definitely an aftermarket coating. Someone must have gotten fed up with the idiots salting the roads up North till they're white.

GM doesn't undercoat, but dealers do.

maybe I'm an optimist, but I'd say the original owner was (like all of us) thinking he'd be keeping this car forever and wanted to protect it. He likely drove it that way also. For the DIY'er it's a bit of a PIA, but it infers good behavior for maintenance and previous driving habits(?). OK- I am being optimistic- LOL.

If it’s a lanolin / oil type coating, it’s not the end of the world. Dirt will collect and will solidify the coating to the point it can be rubbed off, but not easily washed off, maintaining a nice rust free surface. On the other hand, if it’s a hard rubber type coating, that’s not a great option. Those type coatings can trap moisture and actually cause more significant rust problem's.

The “black tar” that many companies used to use in the 1970s and 80s (Tuff Kote Dynol, Mickey’s, AutoArmor, etc) actually can seal in moisture and dirt if it’s not applied correctly. These old fashioned rustproofing made things actually worse, forcing the rust to develop from the inside out.
Check your door jams. See any plastic caps in them? That’s where they drilled into the jams to squirt rust proofing tar in between the body and seams. As stated before lanolin-based prices are the best option today. I recommend Fluid Film.
