Shipping wheels economically?
Was about to close a deal on some factory forged wheels from out of state when the seller learned their shipping cost would be over twice what they had estimated and quoted. UPS was saying $500 from Georgia for four 8.5" wheels without tires. I didn't specifically inquire, but that may include a materials and packing fee.
Wanted to see if anyone has recommendations about shipping options that may be more economical. Thanks! |

Did you get the price from The UPS Store? If so, they are lot higher than if you packed and shipped them yourself through UPS or FedEx Ground. I don't know if they still do it but Greyhound Bus Lines and Fastenal used to ship larger items at a pretty good rate. The only issue with either of those is that the packages have to be dropped off and picked up at Greyhound or Fastenal.

All shipping costs have increased in the last few years. Fed Ex and UPS have had rate increases this year. $500.00 is not a bad deal for shipping across the country in my opinion if that includes boxes and packing materials. Usually the initial cost is reasonable but when they factor in the size and weight of the boxes especially 4 that’s what increases the cost of shipping.

Try to use a service like stamps.com or shipstation to get the best rates. It should be about half that if you pack the wheels yourself. If you just bring them to the UPS store and have them pack and ship for you, you'll pay that $500 or so.

Shipped four 20" Durango rims from Central Coast California to Florida. Thankfully had my own box from seats I bought. 141 pounds of weight. Total shipping was $350. This was just two months ago. $500 seems a little high. Even the phoroptor, chair, table and a few small devices for our new low vision optometry clinic greatly exceed 250 pounds combined are only $450 shipping.
$500 might be if UPS packs and then ships, which seems about right.

Just spent $130 shipping my blower to ATI through UPS. I had them pack it. UPS will only cover the value of the item being shipped if they are the ones who pack it. Otherwise, if it gets there looking like it went to the World Cup, S.O.L. If I had packed it myself and sent it U.S.P.S. it still would have cost around $100 with enough insurance to cover the value. That’s using a 16x16x16 box and a ton of HD bubble wrap. Total weight about 30lbs. You’re talking wheels, bigger & heavier. I think $500 is about right, but as others have stated, you can pinch some pennies here and there, just don’t forget to insure each package. Better to have and not need, and all that jazz.

I purchased a takeoff set of wheels and tires (mounted) about a year ago and had them shipped to me on a pallet by a freight company. It was cheaper that way than in individual containers.

Check out pirateship.com. I had an 81 lb big brake kit shipped to me cross-country, and it saved a ton- $78 instead of $395 quoted by the UPS store.
