Question about air dams

So my new car came with a set of 4 plastic pieces. There's two air dams for the front part numbers, 23408773 and 23408774. There's also two for the rear which is some kind of rear suspension covers 22823592 and 22823593.

I went back to my dealership to have them installed and was told by the service department that these pieces are only used if you intend to put the vehicle on a track, which kinda sounds like BS to me.

Does anyone have any GM references that describe what these parts are really for and perhaps some real world information on why I would want to install them or not install them? I searched this site and didn't find much information.

Actually, they are correct. In the trunk, you should find a paper with instructions on how to install them. Somewhere near the top of the paper it specifies that they are for track-use only. Leaving them on during regular driving will risk causing damage by allowing more road debris and water to hit the back of the brake assembly.

The front air dams are stock and found on 6th gen camaros. They should be on the car unless you have some type of modified front. Is this a Chevy dealer telling you this? I will go check my car but I think I have the back suspension cover on my car too.

That’s only for the back suspension cover, right? The front air dams are for everyday driving.

The only installation paper I found was for the two front sections and it says nothing I could find about track use only.

Your dealer is an idiot.

The front air dams( the part numbers you listed anyway) are what is attached in the picture below right in front of the wheels. To my understanding, they are for high speed aerodynamics in reducing drag therefore improving fuel economy. They should be installed, but not critical to anything. They are NOT the brake coolers others are thinking you're talking about.

As for the rear parts, those are the lower control arm covers. Those SHOULD absolutely be installed. They will prevent mud, dirt, and other debris from building up on the control arm and other components. Those are just not for the track.

I’m sorry, are you referring to the items in the red circles here? I wanna make sure I’m talking about the right thing.

Part number 23408773(4) refers to the items in the second picture.

Part numbers 22823592 and 22823593 are the lower control arm covers in the back of the car.

Ok, completely my fault here, I was mistaken in what I thought you were referring to.

Your dealer is an idiot. Please refer to the first post here by ChevyRules for the correct answer.

All mine where in the trunk when I got the car last July. I asked them whstvyhey are for . The dealer tech said the lower control arm rear covers are for if you drive in snow or dirt roads to keep debris off the arms. The rest were for racing.

I think I’m going to install the pieces myself.
