New Leftover Questions
Guys, This site is a wealth of information!!!! I am picking up a New 2017 2SS Leftover from out of state. I have a couple of questions before I head back home with it from the dealer. Its approx. a 450 mile maiden drive.
1-Since it has been in inventory for a long time, should I have an oil change done at dealership before leaving with car? 2-Should it be synthetic oil or regular oil? 3-Driving it home what would proper break in speeds be? (Can I hammer it?) Alternate speeds, etc? I have more faith in this site than asking the dealership. |

1. I do not believe you need to I just had my 1st oil change today almost a year later and 2200 miles. 2. Dexos full synthetic is what the manual calls for and what the dealerships will put back in. This is what the local dealership put into my car this morning 10 quarts. 3. I was ranging from 60-80 I did twice to get on it to get on the ramp from the rest area and the other to get around a rock truck. I put 1152 miles on my drive home from the dealership (Detroit to Orlando). Hope this helps.

The oil life counter will run down after a set amount of time, regardless of miles driven. If it's been sitting for a long, long time, you may as well get it changed before the drive just to get some fresh fluid in it and reset the counter. Maybe you can get the dealer to toss that in.
As pewterz said, any Dexos spec oil is fine - the dealer will use AC Delco obviously, which is generally considered to be Mobil. You can read hundreds of threads about oils for your own use in the lubrication forum. Vary the speed on the highway, try not to cruise for too long at one particular speed - vary speeds or occasionally downshift. Avoid exceeding 4000 RPM for the first 500 miles, per the track prep guide (which has general break in tips). Here's the whole guide, and you can read their advice on page one: https://my.chevrolet.com/content/dam...tion-guide.pdf Enjoy the trip home and the new ride. |

I had a long drive back home, what I did to alternate speeds was just randomly stick it in a different gear for a little while. I would personally ask if they could do a change, they say to change the oil after a year regardless of mileage for a reason. Manufacturers love to boast a low coat of ownership, so IMO they would say 5 year oil changes if they could get away with it. I'd hate to see a warranty issue because they see no proof of an oil change for over two years because you waited until a year after you bought it to change it first. Maybe that's paranoid, but it's easy insurance to do it now. You car will never be hurt by having too new of oil. My car was stored anyway in a showroom or something for a LONG time, so I got to 500 miles asap (a lot of manufactures have high content of specific break in elements to help break in, in the factory fill)and had it changed.
My 2cents Your car, your choice.

Most manufacturers use break in additives in the oil, so changing it early is not only not needed but not what the car was designed for. At least run it a couple thousand miles and drive it normal.

I just did this on Friday. New Jersey to Ohio (420 miles). I thought about the same thing in regards to the oil life. I was told it's not just the miles, but time is also factored in as well. I wanted a 2SS but was looking for a really good deal so I decided to look for a 2017 left over within a 500 mile distance and found a great deal. Dealership in Ohio gave me the best discount along with all the Chevrolet incentives. The one thing you may want to consider is the front end getting blasted on major highways for that distance. I brought 2 rolls of 3M painters tape and taped the whole front end off (except headlights obviously). Took me about 20 min, but worth it. Came off without damage .......just a suggestion. Good luck!

Do the oil change after you get back to home...
Vary your speed and gear your in on the highway every 25-50 miles. Keep it under 4500. Lean on it once in a while.
