Experiences with Remote "Mail Order" Tunes

Anyone have first hand experience with this method?
Instead of the "classic" Dyno Tune

Use a "known" / base file for the FI application, Log (I.E. with HPT or EFIL in different driving situations on the street (mix of WOT, Highway, City Etc.) and then possibly track as well.
After that, Email the logs to the tuner and he then creates the best performing file.
Re-log this file for fine-tuning and then receive a final build for good?

If you have your own software and they can email tunes and log files back and forth it works. I've done this a lot. Need a wideband and log it also.

I was in this predicament also. At the end of the day, (in my opinion) I felt that I better spent the money on a rolling dyno. this way they can hook up a wideband and tune it while you wait. so in 3 hours. I had mine to where I liked it.

Thanks for the input

What if I have a "well known" / standard application, which is common enough for a file to already be perfected by a tuner, who tuned numerous such exact same setups?

I guess that this option too would be preferable to the canned tune, that comes part of the Non-Tuner kits.
For example, the ATI's P1-SC / P1-X based kits.

I prefer to avoid straining the engine on the dyno, if I can use a file which has already been perfected on a similar application many times before. I know that no engine is exactly the same as the other, but I tend to believe that the differences are negligible and the power differences would not be varying more than +/- 20 WHP on average ?

If you don't want to "strain the engine on the dyno" why are you upgrading the car?

The canned tunes leave power on the table. Mail order is usually for people who live far away from a reputable shop. Dyno tuning is the same as mail order (you have to "strain the engine" for any tuner to do their job) but you get a pretty print out to mount on the wall.
