I took a long road trip from Atlanta to San Francisco and back just recently and god ever did I wish my seat would recline.. otherwise the only option is to sleep in the back seat.

I have have completed this mod on my pass seat yesterday, a little delay was I needed to get a new 3/8''drill bit so had to run out for that, I did not remove seat from car like OP showed in his pic was a little leery about removing the seat belt bolt and was able to perform the drilling part with seat on its side, (you need to unbolt it)and remove plastic trim pieces using a Torx20, as posted in another thread you need to drill both sides and the seat now FULLY reclines I will post pics before I do drivers side to show a comparo of recline.
Notes: To get a noticeable recline you will have to move seat forward a bit, you may want to invest in a new 3/8 drill bit for this project, by not removing seat from car you will have metal filings on the carpet when your done so you will want to vacuum those up (at least I did want them out). the drilling is a little intense so a powerful drill and sharp bit is important. Furthermore I agree with another poster that this is GM's & seat vendors way of having one seat (part#)for two diff app's. (convt & coupe).

Is it intense enough to use a hammer drill?

I think a regular drill would be fine with a sharp/new bit the issue was it wanted to walk so I used a smaller bit then the 3/8, it's the weld type material then you hit the limiting pin welded to the material in the hole, I found the partially drilled pin on the carpet, I bought a Milwaukee titanium bit with variable helix and chip breaker (wording from the package) from HD for $10

Could someone point out what needs to be drilled to allow the seat to fully recline? I cannot figure it out from the pictures posted.
I take a nap in my car every day on lunch and reclining the seats all the way would make me sooooo much happier. |

I did it on the passenger side. I didn't do a video because I knew it'd get ugly. I did not remove the seat. 1. I removed the plastic trim on the bottom of the seat where the power switches are. The front wasn't too bad as you could get your head down in the footwell and see the screw. The rear screw was a different story. Very hard to see. 2. Anyways, next was to unzip the leather seat cover and slide it up to get it out of the way. 3. This exposed the weld that needs to be ground away. So I started grinding away until it was close to flush with the metal. Then I drilled a hole to the side of the stop. Then drilled a little bigger hole and I could see the stop to the left of the hole. I stuck a screwdriver in there and pried it and it broke free. Then it fell....never be seen again. 4. That was not the end. It still didn't work as there's a stop on the left side of the seat. This is where I took the advice from another thread and sat in the seat, powered it back and once it stopped, I leaned back (holding the button) with all my weight and it broke free. 5. Still not done. The seat was still not 100% yet. it didn't move forward. So, more coercing forward and backward a few times and it finally freed up and works smoothly now. Who knows where the other stop went. I think whats happening on the left side (the side that wasn't drilled out) is that when you lean back and break it free...it only breaks the stop 1/2 way. Then when you move the seat forward, you catch the stop again, but its weaker now. You force it forward and it breaks clean off. Again, nowhere to be found. lol I'll see if I can take a pic

the greenish painted area right above the pressed in rivet,
and the drivers seat factory max recline, pass seat reclined modified, Now no more complaints about taking her Kia Optima on long road trips cause that seats are more comfy & recline. Also note that you will need to remove plastic trim piece using T20 Torx and unzip cloth seat materiel to see the area to be drilled. Read grandpa_ss instructions posted above for more info and post #1 also.
