In the words of the great Peter Griffin: Oh for Christs sake who the hell friggin cares? The odds of me ever being in an accident in the middle of nowhere are slim to none because I just never go into the wilderness, and if someone steals my car that means they can drive stick and have cracked my rolling code transponder ignition system, so they have expensive equipment and they're smart. Good for them. My insurance will cover it thank you.

I just don't agree with making OnStar standard and mandatory. The system should be an option. I will be removing mine as well - well, at least just disabling the transceiver so I can still have use of the microphone for bluetooth.

So thank you to the OP for providing this information - I've been getting antsy waiting for Helms to release the stupid service manual lol!
Ever think about the secounds or minutes you gain from the onstar sending help vs someone calling it in over the phone? Onstar will have your exact location and might be able to talk and comfort you in a time of need.

I can't believe people are debating whether or not someone has the right to remove a tracking device from their car.

1) it's their car

2) it's there choice - or atleast should be

End of discussion

Where was it stated that someone doesn't have the right? I see a poster claiming paranoia, that's a far cry from debating the rights of anyone.

Though, it's the internet, and a car forum, so hyperbole and appeals to emotion falling into ad-hominems in short order should be expected...

the pic shows it with the black plastic panel unscrewed and removed. Again on the passenger side of the dash under the very end of dash (near bottom of firewall). They made it more difficult to get to this time around but it is definitely straight forward once you locate it (which was half the battle).

go back and read the comments. the op was called paranoid - was suggested he had something to hide and suggested he was illegally street racing.

So ya - people acted pretty uncivil towards a person simply wanting to remove a device from their car.

I'm glad you like your onstar. I'd be interested in hearing what you like about it - I havent found any value in mine.

Great thanks. Now, from what I understand if you remove OnStar completely you lose the Bluetooth speaker/microphone. So now we need to figure out how to disable the transceiver while retaining Bluetooth. My guess is that you will have to actually open the OnStar box itself and unplug the harness that powers the transceiver circuit while keeping everything else connected and powered.

I like how intrusive Onstar is. It records my location, speed, tells me how low my oil is, tire pressure, locks, ignition etc.

They also send me frequent reminders about how I can give them more money!!! It's basically like having someone in your car, when there really isn't anyone in the car.........

Yessir, infact we're going to open it up tomorrow and investigate exactly what needs to be removed in the os module to keep it from recording info while still retaining bt.

the onstar's cell radio is likely a daughter board that can be removed. you can then reconnect and should have all the hands free ability still working but onstar completely unable to send or receive data.

This would be ideal.

I'll look into this asap. I've had my onstar's fuse pulled since bringing the car home in february. Was waiting for the Helmes manual that still isn't out yet to get the physical location but now I can jump ahead Thanks!

Yep. pretty clear. Not sure why there's confusion.

BTW, you dont lose bluetooth in general by disabling or disconnecting onstar. You just lose the bluetooth microphone. everything else Bluetooth continues to work just fine.
