Is this normal wear?

So I had to replace my rear tires around 15k because of a nail in them. I went to get my North Carolina state inspection done yesterday and they failed me because the outer edge of the front have no tread according to them. They currently have 18k miles on them. The center and inner part of the tires still have tread. When you compare them to the rear though, I can see what their talking about. Maybe I'm wrong on this, but I feel like the tire still has plenty of tread. Is this normal wear for these tires? I don't have any alignment issues or noticed anything weird, so I don't know if there's something wrong or if it's just normal. TIA for any help.

looks normal to me... I have 22k miles on my tires and not much left (and I hear that is pretty good mileage out of the goodyears)

According to your pic, NONE of the tire sections have any tread... yet it is ABOVE the wear bars...so.... I think it should pass but?
I'm not sure if you can do anything about it. we don't have inspections over here... and no rain, so I plan to take mine down till they are slicks!

Ok thanks for your input! They rated the inner and center as having enough tread, but not the outer so I just thought it was strange. I went ahead and ordered new tires anyway since I figured there was no way around it. Definitely not getting the good years again.

That does seem like abnormal wear. Here's a picture of them new:

I looked at that picture today. The wearing on the outside is what's concerning to me. I don't know if this is normal considering the miles on them or if have another issue going on since the inner and center have tread left. When I got the rears out on, the fronts were looked at too and they didn't notice anything unusual so I'm thinking it would normal wear?

I'd definitely check the alignment at least.

I was going to agree that the outer most section (and inner most section) are worn more than the middle of the tire (likely related to how hard you are cornering)

if you drive like a grandma then I would say there may be an alignment problem otherwise it is hard to not take the edges off the tires (even with perfect alignment).

the outer edge of the tire has a shallow tread pattern, so the "tread" disappears like yours well before the tire is actually worn out. It is a bummer that there is no way to tell how much rubber you have left at the sides (i.e. no wear bar) so they can just say FAIL I guess.

Like others have said, could be spirited driving around corners, or it could be that you need an alignment. Personally, my tires always wear faster on the outsides, because I like to take corners like a bat out of hell.

I wish they would do vehicle inspections around here...at least for tires/safety. I have seen some scary shit.

Then you need to get an alignment and dial in a little more camber

Have you noticed a large drop in dry traction. Like spinning all through 2nd and 3rd gear? Its like when the stock goodyears hit a certain milage the compound turns to where it looses all traction.

I do the occasional spirited driving around corners. Nothing crazy though. I haven't noticed any pulling to one side or the other or any loss of grip. I did get a coupon the other day from my dealer for a free alignment check so I may take them up on that. The only thing I've noticed recently that's different is I'm getting a slight vibration when when I accelerating or decelerating. From what I read though in the forums it may be the torque converter, so I need too get that looked at.
