Buying cars from family members can go sour (as mentioned). I definitely wouldn't buy a Z06 which, as a mode, is occasionally problematic, from a family member. Plus I'd rather have the ZL1!

OP, I know most have told you to stay with ZL1 1LE since this is ZL1 forum. How about just for sake of arguement, here are some reasons to consider Z06. I do not own a ZL1 yet or corvette. Just a car guy here.
First, the looks of the Z06 are of the super car type. I have seen some in person and they are awesome looking and elegant. I am sure you will not find anybody out there saying anything bad about their looks. It is more universally appealing. While ZL1 1LE looks are not for everybody as evidenced in this forum from people not liking the wing, dive planes, hood wrap. The Z06 just has that appeal for everybody and be aggressive at the same time. Second, power to weight ratio is great. Z06 has same HP as ZL1, but on a lighter chassis. Driving a lighter car has a different characteristic than a heavier one. I guess this just based on your personal preference as to which you like. Third and maybe one of my favorite features of the corvette, is the ability to remove the roof. How cool is it to have that great fall or spring weather and ability to remove the roof and go for a nice ride. If you do not feel like racing the vehicle, just go for a nice cruise with the top removed. That is one feature that if you really like, that you might want to take into consideration. And for this reason, gives it more versatility than the ZL1. Can be a nice looking coupe and have its tops removed. Fourth and in regards to buying from your brother in law. I really do not see any issue with that. In matter of fact, you should be more familiar with how he took care of the car. Buying a used Z06 from someone else and you might not be so sure how well it was beaten or taken care of. And being close in relationship, means more transparency. Any issues, he will be more honest with you. With a close relationship like this, I would ensure I am being as close to 100% honest. At least in my family, we are like this. Not sure if this makes us in the minority or not. I would much rather buy from a family member than some unknown person. Whatever you do, best of luck. |

'15 zo7 = 60k to 68k, depending on other options, bells and whistles. Like what 1/2/3LZ, PDR and nav? 3LZ also has access to more interior options, different trim in leather and all which can be acquired for extra $. If it is just a base 1LZ zo7 package, you can get em for 63k. 3LZ and zo7 are about 67-68k, even for 2016 models. Give it a couple months, I can see zo6's dipping into high 50s.
Price wise, a zo6 and a zl1 is actually pretty close (comparing 2017's that is, used zo7 is cheaper). I normally do not advice getting a used performance vehicle since it was most likely abused but when it comes to vettes, i would actually advice locating a used one. Why? There are a crap load used c7s out there that have less than 5k miles on them and were driven to cars and coffee, car shows and driven 5 mph below the speed limit lol, and did I mentioned that the price is a good 20k below it's MSRP? Now that's out the way, ZL1 1LE / zo7 are track oriented vs street driving. I would personally go with a zo7 over a ZL1 1le for street purposes. Another thing to keep in mind is that do you plan on tracking? I hope you are since Z07 + ZL1 1LE = track packs. Also, '15s and '16s Zo6's could potentially have overheating issues (which is repaired by warranty AND GM does offer the '17 zo6 SC lid as well as angling IC bricks as a retrofit which fixed any overheating issues). If you just plan on street driving and never track, don't bother with zo7/zl1 1le imo. It's a rougher ride and too much drag vs zo6/zl1 but hey, that's just my own personal opinion. Stage 1 aero for c7 is more than enough for street use. Just because MAYBE 1% of owners overheated on track, doesn't mean they all do. I know plenty who do not have a single issue (whom also track theirs twice/three times a month... Feel free to look at corvette forums as well) and some that do. Which is only the case for '15s and '16s. And guess what? GM already has applied a fix for it. |

Christ, I feel bad for him now, that pricing blows!
I was thinking low 75k/high 85k. |

Only vettes that didn't take a HUGE hit are c7 z51s. I mean look at our camaros. 46.5k went down to low 40s new and 33k for used ones (2SS, nav, mrc, npp etc)... More than 10k in less than 2 years! ZO6s took even a worst hit but their MSRP is also double a camaro lol.

Stay away from buying used. Get the 1LE. Newer technology also. And buying within the family is never that good.

From what I see, this ZO7 package (while incredible) is a boat anchor after the original purchase.
Cup 2's that run 2k and have a life expectancy of 5k-8K miles? CCB's that could run upwards of $12k (rotors & pads) to replace. Where/how does this package add to the equity of this car? Last edited by S.T.A.R.; 08-23-2017 at 08:35 AM. |
