I am including cars owned by the parents for use by the kid in both cases.
Where my son now attends college almost all the kids keep a car on campus.

All the millenials I know get a car for personal use much sooner than I would have envisioned in my youth. The only reason they don't shop and buy a new car is because their parents bought or gave them one.
EXACTLY my experience. One of the happiest days in my household was when my oldest got his drivers license and was able to drive himself and his brother to school. They nicknamed the Chevy Blazer we bought for them "The Errand-mobile" because they had the "privilege" of making all the last minute grocery store and post office runs.

Now that my youngest graduates (walks tomorrow) and heads to college in the fall, the Chevy Cruze that he's been driving to school this year becomes my winter car, since he will not have or need a car on campus.

I don't care, I'll be 78 and if I'm alive I'll still be drag racing and having the same erection everytime I drive my 10 second Camaro, probably 9 second by then. Even if I have to take a 1/2 a Viagra at 78 I'll still be able to drive with no hands. Ha Ha

Get 'em while you can!

Down in his barn My uncle preserved for me an old machine – For fifty-odd years -

To keep it as new has been his dearest dream

I strip away the old debris, that hides a shining car

A brilliant red Barchetta (Camaro), from a better, vanished time

Fire up the willing engine, responding with a roar!

Tires spitting gravel, I commit my weekly crime…

This is an even more extreme projection:

All fossil fuel cars gone in 8 years, everyone rides on Uber or similar.

Back in the 1970's they predicted we would all be gone NOW due to another Ice Age. As well as global famine due to the huge explosion in population. Yet here we are.

Hillary was heavily predicted to win last November too.

That is the other article I was referring to in post #14 of this thread. I had read it just before going in to speak on this topic at a conference. They do not take into account how long it would take to replace 246 million cars already on the road, especially since many of the people driving those cars cannot afford another car, new or used and will not trade off driving a car they have already paid for in order to use an Uber, Lyft, or hired autonomous vehicle. Sometimes common sense isn't.

Cars will have fuel cells based on hydrogen. This will take about 30 years to transition. Think tanks like this one are overly optimistic on the transition time.

This fuel-cell vehicle is on sale NOW. Fueling stations are the current limiting factor.

Toyota wants flying cars in time for the 2020 Olympics
It's backing the "Skydrive" car that would soar 33 feet above the ground.

The aim is to get the car flying by next year and have it commercialized in time to light the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games torch.

I agree, although more efficient fuel cells are under development!! CNG is another alternative and again fueling station infrastructure is an issue.

This country has no no focused energy policy, and we have been dealing with this since 1974!

I don't see autonomous vehicles picking me to go elk hunting or camping for a week. Or taking me up to Stevens Pass to go skiing Friday nights.
Running errands around town on a Saturday afternoon.....uhh...no. I want to get in my car, go where I want, stop for lunch, whatever, and get it done on my timeline.
Maybe work for city folks who live in a big city, but out here in Gods country, we like our hot rods, shotguns, and four wheel drives.
