Break in miles
Wondering how many miles you put on your SS before you let it eat i know the manual says 1500mi. But I can't wait that long I have 650 now

Long break in periods are supposed to give you a long lasting engine. Racers beat the hell out of their new engines to get them to loosen up fast. I started to take liberties at 1,000 miles. Just don't get your ass thrown in jail for going 170 mph on some dark lonesome highway.

If you plan on long term ownership, over 100,000 miles, take it easy for the first 1500. You don't have to completely baby it but keep it under 4500 rpm.
I actually plan on keeping mine 200,000 miles. Drive it all the time, it's not a garage queen. So for the first 1500 I kept it under 4500 rpm and accelerated smoothly. Then I let her rip and haven't been able to quit smiling since. |

Age old question with NO good answers. You might start to assemble a consensus though.
Let it warm up. Drive it like you're going to drive it but don't beat it. (c'mon... let it be new for a minute!!) Occasional forays to increasingly higher RPM's with cool downs in between are good for seating your rings. Engine braking pulls oil up into the head for better lubrication. 1000 miles... you're good to go. I do a break in oil change but that's personal preference... |

I agree with most of above folks. Drive it well but don't go insane and you'll be fine. I go a little crazy on break in, but it's mostly overkill (and I know it).
3-500 miles - Never over 4000 RPMs, generally lighter with some bursts of throttle and keep the engine speed varying 500 miles - oil change 500-1000 miles - Moderate driving with some WOT bursts, but not from a dig. No going over 4500RPMs 1000-1500 miles - Adding in some more spiriting driving, but still being careful off the line (diff and transmission care are the thought there) 1500 miles - diff and oil change 1501-infinity - Drive it like you stole it! YMMV and again, I have access to a lift and so it is easy to do overkill at my house. The extra oil change is probably excessive, but this sucker is MINE

I'll be your beat the sh1T out of it test guy for you LOL. Been doing ever since I left the dealership then up the ante, at I believe just under 3k, and through on a supercharger. I must say though, I do not blow the tires off and mainly spin them from a good 30-40 plus roll. But still no smoke just intending on hooking. Maybe I'll do it when I'm close to replacing them
But I always downshift with a floor plant. I've dogged all of my previous cars and never had any issues but then again I don't tend to keep them until they have 100k plus miles.

I did a mix of easy/hard, (taking what the mix was here on the forum and formulating my own idea) until 1500.
Side note - anyone know why the C7 Corvettes have only a 500 mile break-in, with the same engines? (LT1/LT4).

The most critical time for the motor is the first fire up and couple of miles done at the factory.
