WD-40 on Shift Knob Good Idea?
I have an A8 and I've noticed recently that the trigger on my shift knob is getting squeaky. It's happening often enough to become annoying now. I was thinking of maybe spraying a light mist of WD-40 behind the trigger to quiet it down. Is this a good idea?

I don't have an A8 but am not a huge fan of WD40. It may make the squeaking go away in the short term, but WD40 eats grease so you'll lose whatever lubricants were there originally. I'd try something like a teflon based spray but check with the dealer. There may be another lubricant they recommend.

I'm with him. ^ WD-40 can also harm some plastics, I wouldn't use it. A little bit of Silicone spray may take care of it & it won't hurt anything or dissolve grease.

Wd-40 is not a lubricant. If you want to spray something as mentioned above try silicone spray.

Wd 40 is harsh and runs all over. As others have said get a spray lubricant that stays where you spray it.

I used to be Dragoneye...
|
GM parts departments sell something they call "superlube". It goes on as a spray, and cures as a viscous lubricant that stays in place. They recommend it for body hinges, like doors, etc. Might work here?

Had a friend who used WD-40 to maintain his household revolver. If he took it out , he would douche it down with the stuff, reload it and stick it in the hall drawer.
One night he almost NEEDED to use it , but the Deputies showed up and took care of the nut job who was trying to break into his house. Imagine my friends surprise when he found the gun was totally seized up. WD-40 will turn to a varnish like coating if applied enough times. I soaked the gun in solvent. Got it functioning again, but the AMMO was all ruined. WD-40 will penetrate and kill the primer. NOT a huge fan of WD-40. There are far BETTER lubricants/cleaners out there. |
