Depreciation- Yikes!
Holy crap guys...
I guess I'm spoiled by my 2012 FJ cruiser (paid 33K) which has 56,000 miles on it and is supposedly worth about the same amount as my 2016 loaded 2SS. New to American cars, but I guess this is pretty much par for course eh? I paid about 43K out the door and I was curious about trade in / resale value, so I looked into what it might sell for (5600 miles). I'm getting anything from *maybe* 30,000 (told that dude to pound sand), to a high quote of 33 (which is high KBB value). Granted these are dealer quotes but sheesh.. Is this thing gonna continue to dive or can I expect it to stay at 30 for a while if I keep low miles on it? Thanks! |

Driving it off the lot alone results in a huge hit. This is normal from what I understand.

Right I get that. Just wasn't expecting 13k in one year. Trying to get an idea of when and if this plateaus. I'm thinking I should be able to hold on to 30K (I hope) for at least a couple of years- I don't know though which is why I'm asking. Like I said I'm spoiled by my FJ, which has depreciated 3,000 in 5 years lol.

At the risk of getting flamed by some people, I'll just state the truth: Japanese cars hold their value better than American cars.
I had a 2000 Honda Prelude 5 speed I bought brand new in Dec. of 1999. I owned it until May of 2010. It had 225,000 miles and some rust when I sold it, and I still got $3000 - put it up on craigslist for $3500 on a Thursday and that Friday I had a guy call and offer me the 3k sight unseen. Those FJs were cool. I drove a 6 speed once - man those gauges are tiny though! |

This is what I find for what I have as a 2SS, mag-ride, Nav with 8,100 mile. I've never had a problem getting NADA value for a car.
Selling a car in its first year is costly and most dealers will low ball you as a trade for obvious reasons. I'll run this car 8 years and probably get at least 25-30% of its purchase price then.

FJ holds its value exceptionally well.
Also to note American vs Japanese American cars you can get below MSRP rather easily not so much for japanese cars also look at total sales from camaro vs FJ the FJ sells a good amount less so there are fewer cars around thus these two factors among others make japanese cars not depreciate as much. ![]() ![]() http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/p/sales-stats.html TLDR Cars depreciate and life goes on. |

Thanks for posting this - I'm encouraged! Mine's non-mrc, but it has every option except for the over-priced 6 pot Brembo's. My value comes out to clean retail of 36K. So the obvious solution is for me to sell privately should I ever desire to get out of it. |

Thanks for the post - very interesting. I think the thing that helps the FJ too is that it is no longer produced. I've got the 2012 Trail Teams edition, and that car gets more attention than my Camaro ![]() I think the Camaro is a hot car - but oh well... people love the FJ. I thought they were ugly as hell the first year they came out, but they kind of grew on me. They are EXCELLENT trucks, I must say. Absolutely zero issues with it for the 5 years I've had it. |

Yuuuuup. Dammit
![]() Well trust me, I will NOT make the same mistake twice. Next American sports car is gonna be lightly used. I'm waiting to see what Ford does with the next GT500, but at the same time, not if it looks like the latest catfish-overbite model that just got revealed ![]() May even go with the new ZL1, but it's gonna have to be a 10 speed auto, used. May be waiting a while for that one

A major factor that contributes to depreciation is how much $$ you optioned the car, and the range of the MSRP price across trims. Higher optioned cars tend to take a larger hit to value, because they are above the average price of the car.
For example, if a base Camaro SS is ~$36k, and a more loaded model is ~$45k, then the average sale price is going to be somewhere in the middle. So, if a dealer or auction is analyzing average used prices on Camaro SS', the value of the more loaded models will be brought down by the sales of the lower-end models. This holds particularly true in the used market, where buyers are shopping for deals, and not custom ordering the car. Case-in-point - I bought a 2015 M3 a couple years ago. I ordered a stripped-down base model at ~$65k. Most M3 buyers option the cars closer to $80-90k. So, there is a very big spread in the MSRP, and most are optioned at the higher end. One year later, I was able to resell the base M3 for $64,500k, because the higher average sale price of the loaded models boosted the average price of the car across the range. The M3 is a bit more extreme example then the Camaro, but you get the point. Yes, I understand that options and trims do make a difference even in the used market, but those options lose more of their value then the base MSRP of the car. |

Most dealers use Edmonds for used car values. They are usually lower than the other guides, but also closer to auction prices.
