Windshield replacement

So a rock hit my windshield and created a tiny chip and then the next day when I turned the heat on a cracked appeared originating from the chip. Now, I called Safelite and they're asking for $700 to replace the windshield. I called a auto glass shop near me and they said I can buy my own windshield (from GM of couse) and they could install it for $100. My question is can I use a windshield from the 2016 camaro instead of the 2017?

The reason for that is because I found a website that charges less than the dealer, but it would be for the 2017 if I buy it from the dealer. Please advise. Thanks!

We live in rock chip hell ,with replacements WS's annually.

DO be careful regarding QUALITY of replacement glass. We learned that OEM is usually better than the bargain replacements. The cheap glass is usually softer and more susceptible to small chips that the OEM glass seems to take in stride. You WILL pay extra for OEM though.

If You get a chip DO take it to an auto glass company. many times they can fill it and that will stop it from cracking. Chips low in the WS will crack as soon as the defrost is turned on, first cold morning. If filled they usually do fine.

I had my windshield replaced last Fall. I have glass coverage on my insurance so it cost me $0.00. I had to go to a glass shop that was approved by my insurance company, though. I made sure they used OEM glass (it was etched with GM logo and other numerical identifiers) and I also thoroughly inspected their work. They did cause some grief by getting the window sealant on my paint. I asked them to remove it and they ended up taking off a bit of paint at the base of my A-pillar.

Price wise, their quote for the complete replacement was about $700. I think they had the glass (purchased from a local GM dealer) was about $350.

I need to go check my insurance, but it looks like I might have to bite the bullet on this one and buy a windshield then get it installed

They made you pay 350 for a chip on a loaner's windshield? I admit this has never happened to me but that seems awfully tacky. Is the dealer not insured for such events?

Also, I wouldn't let something like this scare the crap out of you. It's windshield glass. They get chipped and crack sometimes. It's kind of a fact of life and out of your control. I think putting an aftermarket film, and especially tint, on your windshield is ill advised, especially if the reason is solely to try to mitigate the risk of chips or cracks. Have you looked into glass coverage with your insurance? It is rather cheap coverage and often included with your comprehensive coverage.

That aside, $350 for an OEM windshield is frankly dirt cheap.

I would probably try to avoid safelite. In my semi-recent experience with a different vehicle, they do a rather crappy job (ymmv) and use aftermarket plastic and rubber trim that does not look or work as well as oem (also ymmv). The camaro is new enough that their only option might be OEM but I personally would not trust them that the windshield is OEM either. For sure check the parts before they do the install if you are going to use them. I would advise going to more of a local windshield/glass shop for the job if that is possible for you.

^^ I agree with above. The difference between genuine parts and aftermarket can be surprising when it comes to windshields.

Alright, I'll see if I can cancel my appointment! Thanks! I figured I'd try them out since people seem to use them.
