Mishimoto problems
What are the problems some people are running into with the Mishimoto intake?

It will lean out the Air Fuel Ratio a little. Check out the blog on their website, they have dyno graphs and testing of their intake. If your only mod is an intake and you plan to tune the car then any of them will net the same gains in the end but I would personally prefer the CAI unit. If you do NOT wish to tune the car then I would stick with a Rotofab.

Why do you prefer the CAI but recommend the Roto-fab for non tune? Does it lean it out just because it lets in too much air? |

The Mishimoto leans out the AFR because the MAF housing has a larger diameter (5inches vs 4.5 inches). While this lets more VOLUME of air in, it also slows down the airflow across the MAF. Without going into how MAFs work, this makes the MAF read less air than is actually entering the engine. The MAF reads less air and tells the ECU to add less fuel. And without going even deeper into fuel trims, the ECU will negate this over time.

Meaning the ECU will figure out the car is running lean even though the MAF says it isn't? I obviously don't know where all the sensors are but it seems to me if the computer can sense both the air coming in and the AFR it would have to decide which one is lying to it. To fix the AFR it would have to negate the MAF reading or if it trusts the MAF it has to negate the AFR, does that mean the computer decides which one to follow if the two don't vibe?
Thank you for taking the time to walk me through this! |

An Intake is a worthwhile mod but you wont really see much unless you pair it with other mods and tune the car. If an intake is going to be your only mod then save your money. If you want to do more mods that do not require tuning then you can do the following without needing a tune. -Rotofab -catback exhaust (secondary cat delete optional) such as the borla modular system -Ported LT1 intake and throttle body from EFI Tuning These will get you a nice bump in HP without sacrificing any fuel economy or drivability. |

I don't see you getting 500 FWHP with your chosen mods. The shorties, even by Holley' admission, aren't worth the entry fee. Your other mods are going to be negligible without making the engine suck harder, meaning a cam. While they represent a restriction, if the engine isn't drawing it, then it's just a waste.

https://www.holley.com/products/exha.../70301304-RHKR "Max dyno gains of +8.59 HP & +7.3 LB.FT torque" for $700 + labor and small parts That's max gains, not average, not mean, but max Scroll through the pics of this link and compare the factory manifolds to the Holley. http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/exh...heart-exhaust/ For the gains Vs money, long tubes or don't bother. |
