I have to admit that I find it a little ironic that a "muscle head" would drive around in a car with a bunch of corny decals/vinyl plastered all over the car, ask silly and simple questions that a "muscle head" should already know and then turn around a condemn the poor guy that is just trying to show his car.

Not at all - you own not knowing that stuff, and there is nothing wrong with that. I think the OP is targeting those that don't know, but pose that they do. Maybe I've got that wrong - but I don't think Camaro ownership comes with an automatic requirement to know exactly how it works - plenty of folks just wanna go fast. The problem comes in when you want to pretend, but you just don't...

I agree pretty much. I can walk away easily from the posers. Most of those that just don't know appreciate a lot of what others can help them with.

That's my point exactly....don't buy something and pretend to know just because you have the money. I don't know everything either so when I do buy or add on something I do my research and learn about it so I know what's going on if I am going to partake in something and share my knowledge. It's like voting....don't go in blind and just pick one because it seems cool or what your friends are doing without your own research on what's going on.

I agree - but only to a point. I just bought a new TV - and I did my research to know it would connect to my wifi, had 4k, etc - but I don't know exactly how it works. I don't know what chip-set it has, I don't know how many amps it draws on startup, I don't know what the true refresh rate is vs. the faked one that's advertised, etc. (BTW - don't buy an RCA - I only got 2 years out of my last 55" before it bite the dust - junk!)

Same thing with the houses I've owned - I knew plenty about them, but I couldn't tell you every little details that somebody that built their home from the ground up could have.

The point is, everybody has their own gauge for how much they "need" to know about something. I'm ok with my fellow Camaro brethren not know the size of their intake valves, the bore of their throttle body - even though those are details I like to know and usually end up committing to memory.

My problem with people only begins when they posit that they have a level of knowledge that they clearly do not. I hate a big talker when it's just talk, and no substance.

We recently had a thread on here where one of these "Car Guys" was trying to convince me that he had test driving a Camaro with a V4 engine. When I questioned him on it he just could not even understand the difference between an inline and a v4. If you don't know that, I am pulling your "car guy" card.
Seconded!

Just the title of this thread is enough to make me giggle...."Guys who don't have a clue". Isn't that, like, all of them?

I grew up working on cars when things were still pretty simple. I enjoy the hell out of my 11 2ss rs but don't know a whole lot about it. If a guy has a nice ride a wants to take it to a car show why would anyone care how much he knows about it? Maybe he doesn't like all the annoying questions

I reread the original post:

Muscle heads such as myself and plenty of others would ask questions and we all got the deer in the headlights look: and most of it was simple questions..."what did you Dyno"? "What PSI is you supercharger?" "Are these VVT?" And so forth...the guy couldn't answer a single one except when an older lady aske "do you race it?" And he shook his head yeah and said "a lot"....what posers!
I still don't see where the guy was posing. He was there showing his ride - proudly I'm sure - & was approached with several questions which he wasn't able to answer. The one he did answer at the end, was probably because of how he was made to feel.
To me, it almost seems like bullying due to some jealousy. I feel bad that something that should've been a fun weekend experience for him, probably turned into an awful one.
Frankly, based on the description presented, if I was there I would've jumped in & stuck up for him. It's simply who I am.

Well, to this: there was no bullying and there was no time for anyone to really back the guy up. As soon as someone asked a question even if it was stupid, when the guy didn't answer the inquirer just walked away. The reason he is being called a poser is because a lot of us know the guy and KNOW that he does not race after he claimed he said that he did "a lot". Most of his answers we just "yea, it's fast" and that's ok. But don't go claiming you do something when you don't. No one bullied him or even said anything about him LYING no matter if someone made him "feel like he should answer that way" or not....would you say you murdered someone when you didn't because the police made you FEEL like you should say you did?

You might be right - I don't know that he was posing. I left a little room that I may be mis-understanding what the OP was saying about the person in question in this case:

If he wasn't talking a big game pretending to be the tech-head he's not then I'd agree, there is no reason to badger him about stuff he doesn't know. I'm never down for badgering or attacking someone, unless they're really asking for it. I'd agree, that didn't sound like the case here. I fall into that "make love, not war" crowd. Unless you come against my wife, my son, or my flag. Then it's on! I love a good debate though - but some people can't seem to tell the difference between a discussion and an argument.

Rather, why not come along side him and teach a little. I love an opportunity to provide a little education if folks are interested - I got to teach finding TDC, marking a damper and setting timing on a small block a few weeks ago - man, I miss that stuff! Its not that I know it all, I love to be on the learning side as well.

I may have come in a little on the OP's side because I genuinely do hate it when guys at the Friday night post-up stop show up and talk a big game and throw around any words they've read online, whether they have a clue what they are saying or not. That drives me nuts, and I guess I thought that was what the OP was saying. Definitely could have mis-read that.
