That is scary! How do you know? 260 seems a little high for that gauge not to be climbing toward the red.

i already turn on the auto transmission temp, but there is nothing for coolant temp, with the auto transmission & oil temp, it isn't a digital reading, kind of just like the coolant gauge.

Temp went all the way to 266 IIRC and the alarm goes off at 240 I want to say. Needle barely moved above halfway. Unless it gets dangerously hot the needle is just a dummy. Watch the temp in your DIC screen as its easier to read obviously.

You might need to get your gauge checked. When my fan connector went out and my engine temp shot to 258, the only reason I noticed it was because I saw my needle creeping up past the notch below half resting point. In fact, 260 was the temp where needle rested on H.

Im not worried about it. The gauge isn't useful at all especially when you have the digital read out available. I don't even know why they included it to be honest.

Speaking of Dummy gauges, here's a comparison from my C7.

Scan Gauge, Digital dash (181 Match), and Gauge (220 No match!)
Analog dummy does not represent real temps..
This was done while bringing the car up to temp, and shooting the Pic when the Gauge hit 220 which was it's normal running position but NOT a real temp as you can see..

Thank you, I was waiting for somebody to explain the "dummy concept"…

The front DIC gauges are not real gauges......

It's a "Feel Good" Thing.........Read that: Ignorance is bliss

Years ago when the 370Z came out, Nissan made the mistake of using a "Real" gauge for oil temps. This car ran a notoriously hot oil temp because of its complex Valve train.. Owners, With the reading in their face got all bent out of shape. I developed one of the first DIY Oil coolers for that car and many commercial vendors followed suit. Had they used a dummy the panicky customer relations calls would have dropped to a trickle. Damned if you do, Damned if you don't!!

Ready for another plot twist?

Some guages...including digital display...aren't actual readings at all, but approximations generated by a complex algorithm...like the 5th-gen's oil temp...........

This is my understanding: the digital numbers we see on the DIC are returned values, in other words info the ECM receives/needs to adjust as one progresses down the road. So what is more important to know, the actual real time reading or the value the engine computer is using?

Usually the values returned through the OBD2 port and similarly to the ECU are real numbers. These appear to be the same. I expect it's this value used in determining tune parameters, timing advance etc. A dummy analog gauge is just along for the (averaged) ride...

That proved true for my Sonic where I had a water temp gauge installed and could compare it to what the Ultra Gauge showed.
