Exactly. If your oil isn't getting darker, that means it isn't suspending the carbon (and other) particles that would otherwise create sludge and/or build-up in places you do not want it. Color is of zero indication to the remaining life.

I disagree, if your oil is black as sludge, your saying that's no indication it needs to be changed. Every 3000 miles hasn't failed me in over 25 years.

Black is a color and sludge is a consistency.

Synthetic oil should outlast your filter, regardless of which one you buy. Aside from the first oil change which is what this thread is about, if you're replacing them both regardless of condition every 3k then you're being extremely wasteful. Regular conventional oil - maybe. Not synthetic.

Darkening to a golden color is caused by heat. Blackening should be handled by the filter. The filter should be changed likely every 3-5k as needed while the oil should last you closer to 10k+. If you're changing both at the same time and using full synthetic you're usually doing it wrong since most filters have a much shorter recommended lifespan.

Sludge isn't something you should be seeing anywhere around 10k miles of usage unless you're using regular non-synthetic and leaving the oil and filter in that long.

I'm just about hitting 1k with original oil. Gonna do a change and it'll be interesting to see how it looks and all. It'll probably be getting penzoil platinum full synth.
