Brembo 6 piston on SS

I'm getting close to ordering, decided to get a SS now and let them work the bugs out of the ZL1, before I get it....The SS will be a daily driver...I NEED GOOD BRAKES....plenty of idiots on the local highways, etc.,...would the Brembos be overkill if I don't plan on tracking the car??
I'm looking more at sudden safety stops, etc.???

I have the 4 piston factory Brembos and I have not had a problem with the brakes or lack of any confidence and been well above posted speeds to a dead stop. I would say other than personal choice it is over kill.

Agreed! The 4 piston standard SS Brembos are great, plenty enough for me!

standard brembos are great for daily

if you track it, get the 6 piston

I have the 6 pistons and love them! No problems/noise with daily driving as of 1300 miles.... Sounds lame but I got them mostly for the cosmetic appeal LOL!!!!

I think the standard 4 piston Brembo are a very good system and stop well. But if you want the 6 piston here they are new.

The 6 piston brembos don't stop noticeably shorter then the 4 piston brakes, they are designed to dissipate heat for track days. You might not even notice a difference on the street, better pads will be more noticeable for stopping shorter.

Absolutely correct. Check out the Hawk performance ceramic pads. I have used them on both 5th Gen Camaros and they are great with low dust.

2SS - brake upgrade kit or no?

I am getting ready to order a 2SS. I was planning on getting the "Brake upgrade kit" option. Who wouldn't want better brakes right? But I have noticed that it seems most of the cars the magazines have driven don't have that option. I concluded that based on pricing. If you take a 2SS and put the usual options on it, it comes out to $47k give or take. Add the brake option and you are at $50K. Most of the car magazine's cars are in the high $40K range. And they don't mention the optional brake kit. The latest Motor Trend comparison to an M4 doesn't seem to have the optional brakes, and it stopped way better than an M4.

$3,175 is a lot of change for a brake kit upgrade. I don't know if I will track the car or not. I may very well take it to some HPDEs, but I may not. Its on my list of things to do, but may never get there. Either way, I don't see the car as being a track machine. I have some decent track experience, but I am not going to be able to push the car past about 80% of its capabilities.

If I do end up doing some track time with it, I think a basic pad and rotor upgrade would net me 90% of the same braking as the brake upgrade kit, which I think includes 6 piston calipers over the standard 4.

For $2100, seems like a no brainer to skip the $3175 optional brake performance kit upgrade!?!?!?

I had the same debate when I put my order in. Ultimately I thought to myself under what circumstances would I notice the difference, honestly. My thoughts are probably never. Even if I take it to the strip or track a few times, is it worth it, probably not. So I skipped it.

My only issue with the 4 pistons is that I do NOT trust them. I am not used to the way they brake. I like mine to be at least a sharp brake vs the soft braking.

Granted... I must say that this is when I am driving spirited. Not when I am just on cruise control or driving like a normal human being.

If the ABS kicks in, they stop amazing!!! But let's say you are going 40 mph and you decided not to run a red light just as it's tuning yellow? You really got to SLAM on the brakes to get the car to stop even though a sharper feel would still make you feel the car is actually going to stop, where as the stock 4 piston with pads do NOT, so I feel the need to SLAM on the brakes... That is my feel of em which I HATE.

I do plan on upgrading to the 6 pistons AND upgrading to a different pad once the current pads I have are done for.

I am used to upgrading my brake rotors and pads on all my toy cars, I didn't this time since they put so much effort into the car, figured I didn't need to. But I miss the feel of being able to trust my brakes 100%. It is a personal preference. I am NOT saying the 4 pistons are bad... My '09 F150 super crew cab gives me more trust on the brakes than my camaro does. But my camaro stops so much better. So it isn't about "bad or good", it's the feel I do not like. My evos had DBA 4000 slotted rotors with RacingBrake Et500 pads with the stock brembos. And my evo stopped on a dime which weighed identical to the camaro without sunroof.

same, i like them but there is no initial brake bite, was wondering if the 6 piston would make a diffrence plus they look cool
