Take a screenshot of your System page in Control panel. Mine tells me everything you want to know in there. If yours doesn't have all the information listed then more than likely something is up.

Mine tells me all that, but I've seen some people were able to see if they have a 64 bit capable cpu. Mine shows my current os is 32bit. I want to know if my computer is 64bit capable. if so, then why can't I load the windows 8 64bit.

also, I purchased windows 8.1 today, and it came with the 32 and 64bit CD's. Since I installed the 32bit and used the key on that, can I use the same key for the 64, or will it not ask for a key, and recognize they are together?

edit: I think mine says 32 bit x86 processor.

In my experience, Microsoft has been pretty lenient with keys when you reload your OS. If there is a problem you can usually fix it with a phone call.

At what point does the install of the 64 bit fail?

right when I click on the cd to install, I get the error. forgot what exactly the error is. I don't get off work for another 6 or 7 hours. so i'll just keep playing around with it. it has to be 64bit capable.

ok, I was able to put the service tag into the dell support website and was able to view a list of everything that was shipped to me.

-PROCESSOR, I7-870, 2.93, 8MB, LYN, 95W, B1

-Label, Certificate Of Authenticity, Operating System, W7HP3/6

i'm guessing that means windows 7 home premium 32/64?

if so, then I really can't wait to get home and figure this out. lol

Ok, I'm trying the install again. Boot from CD and then I tried custom install. So far I've gotten a lot further than ever and I'm at 65% "getting files ready". It's looking good so far fellas

That was your problem. You can not do an upgrade from a 32 bit OS to a 64 bit. If you choose the upgrade option before, it will fail during the install. By doing the custom install, you are reloading the entire OS so all files and such would be wiped. That is the only way to go from a 32 to 64 OS.

Changed my mind on the TP-Link Powerline adapter. It worked gangbusters the first day I used it, and since it's garbage. The units shut off after a few seconds and I think after any period of inactivity (like overnight, the first night I had them on) they just won't connect, you have to go up and unplug them all and start over I bet. Well, I am trying not to disturb the person in the in-law suite (my mom in law) who has kidney cancer now. I don't want to go in there evry hour to reset this stupid stuff.

Recycle bin I guess for these. Back to dial up.

Working on my yearly computer replacement project. Usually it's 300-400 PCs' Workstations, and laptops. This year it's about 100. Since it's small this year. I'm wearing all the hats that my contractors would wear. Hoping to streamline the process and train the contractors better for the next round. Next year will be hell. 800 units to get changed out.

What a waste... time to virtualize.

We piloted virtual desktop. The network guys couldn't make it work. Or at least make a virtual environment with a positive user experience. The idea was tossed out for now.
